Hello,

I am a Peace Corps health volunteer serving in rural Zambia. As a health volunteer, I work with the rural health center focusing on education and prevention of HIV and malaria as well as education for child and maternal health and nutrition.

The Lumwana East Rural Health Center has a rapidly growing population. To keep up with the increase of patients and clinic work, I’m requesting your help so the clinic can obtain a laptop.

Because of the high volume of patients and patient records, information is being lost or duplicated. As of now, the clinic relies on a handwritten system for patient information, data collection, and medication inventory. Imagine the difficulty when there is a room filled with paper booklets used as patient files that are preventing the room from being used for examinations, deliveries, or as an office. The books are spread throughout the floor and the bottom layers are being eaten by termites and damaged by water during rainy season. Each booklet has patient numbers or codes which are difficult to organize and are often duplicated. This handwritten booklet system is causing patient information to go missing and then requires patients to use what little money they have to buy a new booklet. The staff members also have to compile data by spending hours and days going through handwritten documents in order to send monthly reports to the district health office. To better serve the 15,000 people (and growing), a laptop would allow clinic staff to easily and quickly access information to best serve the community members as well as keep data together and organized. Overall, having a laptop for clinical use would allow the staff to spend more time serving the community efficiently and collaborate with the district health office. My clinic and I appreciate any contribution you can make as well as sharing my story with others in hopes to meet our goal.
