We are raising money for Lion Mahajak 9 School, a K-6 school in the mountains of Northwestern Thailand. Due to regional poverty, the school struggles to feed and house their 103 students. These funds will purchase beds, rice, and vegetable seeds, enabling students to receive a basic education.

BACKGROUND:

Located in the remote mountains of Northwestern Thailand, Lion Mahajak 9 School is an elementary school that draws students from 5 small villages populated by the Karen and Lahu hill tribes, two of the country's ethnic minorities. Lion Mahajak 9 School allows local children to receive a basic education without moving too far away from their homes and families.
Still, 64 of the 103 students board at the school from Sunday to Friday, only returning home on the weekends. The boarders, aged 5-13, do everything for themselves: tend to their own vegetable gardens, raise pigs and chickens, and cook their own food, all while being full-time elementary students. Living arrangements are rudimentary, with 4 or more students staying in a single small room, and over half of the boarders sleeping on the floor. The students work incredibly hard to receive a basic education, but many of their day-to-day needs are not met due to inadequate funding from the government and the general poverty of the region. School is free for all students; therefore, outside funding sources are of the utmost importance.

TARGETED NEEDS:

This project focuses on the health and wellbeing of the students, critical facets of their ability to learn and succeed. While pencils and paper are important, without food or comfortable living arrangements students cannot meet their full potential. Therefore, this fundraising campaign aims to purchase beds, rice, and seeds to meet the basic needs of Lion Mahajak 9's students.
Of the 64 current boarders, 34 do not have any sort of mattress and sleep directly on the wooden floor. The students consume 150 kilos of rice per week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While rice is the foundation of all of their meals, vegetables grown in their organic gardens provide much needed nutrition for their growing minds. The government supplies some funds to buy rice and seeds, but it is inadequate.

BUDGET:

$3,500 will buy 2700kg of rice, enough to feed 103 students for 4 months, purchase 40 beds and supply 1 years’ worth of vegetable seeds. Donations of any amount will be divided equally across our three target items. Any donations that exceed our $3,500 goal will purchase additional rice for beyond the 4 month period.

For an idea of what your donation will go towards...
• $15 will purchase 1 can of seeds and enough rice to feed 1 child for 1 month
• $25 will purchase 1 bed and enough rice to feed 1 child for 1 month
• $50 will purchase 1 bed, 1 can of seeds, and enough rice to feed 4 children for 1 month.
• $100 will purchase 2 beds, 2 cans of seeds, and enough rice to feed 8 children for 1 month.
• $200 will purchase 4 beds, 2 cans of seeds, and enough rice to feed 16 children for 1 month.
• $500 will purchase 8 beds, 4 cans of seeds, and enough rice to feed.32 children for 1 month.

ABOUT US:

We are a group of eight Duke undergraduates currently participating in a volunteer placement through DukeEngage and the ProWorld Foundation. Our projects focus on environmental sustainability and community development in the Maetang District of Northern Thailand. ProWorld and community leaders in our homestay informed us of Lion Mahajak 9 School so we visited to assess their particular needs. Immediately, our hearts went out to these students, who face such huge challenges to simply receive a basic education. You can be sure that your contribution, no matter how small or large, will make a difference in the lives of these children.

If you would like more information or have any questions, feel free to contact us at skl19@duke.edu and snl11@duke.edu . Thank you! We greatly appreciate your support.
