Esteban: Do you want a pug? That was the opening message a friend sent me via Facebook 2 years ago. My first thought was, "We already have a pug - our beloved Pablo of 6 years.” I continued to read: My sister sold the pug to someone and they brought it back because they don’t want it - it is too much responsibility. That was the moment that I said, “Oh yeah, that's my pug now!!!”
BooBoo, was her original name. She was a beautiful 4 month old puppy, which jumped straight into my arms as soon as she saw me – and licked my face up. She was just like our little Pablito was six years earlier, with tinny legs, and a precious wrinkled face. It took one look into her big brown eyes - to know that I was taking her home with me. Today, she is known as Pepa. Our pet’s names, all start with the letter P: Pablo, Paola, and Pepa. Pablo fell in love with her as soon as he laid eyes on her! He gave her a warm welcoming by licking her all over, and they have been inseparable ever since. Pablo evidently showed her the ropes.
Originally we thought we saved Pepa from being taken to a rescue home - or being abandoned on the street, but that isn’t so…she rescued us! Every morning she jumps onto our bed to wake us up by licking our faces. She also likes to alert us anytime someone is at the door. She had brought a more profound level of love and happiness to our home. She has grown to learn our family’s mood(s) – making us aware of her presence as she makes her way up to our neck(s) - where she loves to nestle. She picked us to love her!
2 years later, she is still a puppy, but a big puppy. She is the bright light of our little corner home in Silverlake -- where all the neighbors know Pepa. She too recognizes them all when they walk along the fence of our front yard. She loves to play with all the kids walking by to go to the school on the next block. She jumps up and down, and dances on her 2 hind legs - as a way of begging for more play.
A couple of nights ago, an unfortunate incident changed Pepa's life. While the front gate of our house was accidently left open (for few moments), Pepa took the opportunity to run out of the gate to play. She made it out to the street, where she was hit by a car, who took off after hitting her. She ran back home with a look of horror on her face, while yelping at the same time. We didn’t know what had happened or what to do. Our hearts came leaping out of our throats; we felt like someone had just beaten our child. Our home hasn’t been the same – a somber cloud has been over our home.
The vet said that although Pepa is ok, her pelvis was broken in 2 different parts. A highly costing surgery is needed for Pepa to be able to walk and dance again. Pablito has continued to stay by her side, licking her hind legs…but he too hasn’t been the same. We have to carry her out to pee, and have to feed her by hand. OUR HEARTS ARE COMPLETELY BROKEN. Our jobs allow us to meet our everyday needs, but our financial situation doesn’t lend itself to afford her surgery at this time. Our little girl is in excruciating pain - and we are seeking immediate financial help/support to allocate to Pepa’s surgery.
