Students in the Resource Room have many different abilities. We work together in small groups to foster independent social skills, fine motor skills and problem solving. 

Through play-based activities and lessons, students are able to develop fine motor, social and cognitive skills. This also allows for students to interact with staff and peers while building emotional maturity and strengthening their ability to communicate emotions and ideas in diverse ways. Additionally, play-based activities engage students through creativity and hands-on learning to meet their learning goals.

Learning through play is an authentic and natural way for students to make gains. Play is a part of who they are at any age and this philosophy allows educators to nurture their need for exploration in ways that allow them to put their hands-on creative tools that can support social and literacy skills, as well as build their number sense. Creating a rich environment with tools that can easily be adapted to support specific skills and curriculum creates endless possibilities for children to unlock their full potential.

This style also allows teachers to engage fully with their students where they partner in the work instead of directly teaching it. Each student has a unique way of learning. Play-based learning can help students of all ages to utilize a variety of tools, master their own style of learning while feeling intrinsically motivated.

If granted, this will provide our students with tools to practice their fine motor, social skills and problem solving skills.
