Alaskan Animal Rescue Friends hasn't added a story.
Carlos is such a special little guy. He is always happy, no matter what is going on. When he first came to us 3yrs ago Carlos was 30lbs, had horrible knees that had been left untreated, and he could barely get around in great pain. We started working with a vet right away and found he was an undiagnosed diabetic in full on Diabetic Ketoacidosis which is a death sentence if not treated swiftly. He maintained his wagging tail and happy demeanor while he dropped weight and adjusted to his new insulin schedule. And he has been happy for almost 3yrs now in a hospice foster. Recently we noticed a few changes in Carlos. He started drinking more and peeing more, he was refusing his food and occasionally vomiting, and his breath took on a very distinct smell. We knew something was wrong and took Carlos to Midnight Sun Animal Hospital where we found out he was once again in full on DKA and although he was still giving kisses, wagging his tail, and exploring all he could, he was in pretty dire straights and needed emergency care to save his life. We had to weigh the options which included treating or putting him to sleep but as we spoke to the vet and he happily gave kisses and wagged his tail non stop it was obvious little Carlos wasn't ready to say goodbye to this world and so he is now there, being treated. What Carlos could use is some donations to help with this vet bill and his future ones as he is on prescription food, insulin, and pain meds for his knees. Hospice dogs are not easy as we are taking on the ongoing costs for the duration of the dogs life. At this point, Carlos is costing about $100/month. We are hoping that perhaps there are some kind hearted folks who would be willing to sponsor Carlos and donate towards his ongoing costs. His current ER visit is estimated at about $3500.
