Alana Perumal hasn't added a story.
Once in a while you meet someone who truly inspires you and
epitomizes the phrase: "Never Say Die!".
In June 2018, I had the profound privilege of meeting Mpho
Mahada when she interviewed for a learnership vacancy at an
organisation who assists previously disadvantaged individuals with
aims of sustainable transformation of our communities and country
through employment initiatives.
Mpho gave birth to her son, Kutloano in 2014. She was excited
to welcome her baby boy into the world and was filled with hopes and
dreams for the future they’d have together.
However, a few months later, Mpho noticed she was falling over
a lot, suffering from constant lower back pain, loss of sensation in
her legs and eventually completely losing all sensation in her feet.
After meeting with Neurosurgeons at the hospital, she underwent her
first operation – she was now completely paralyzed from the waist
down. She was 23 years old. Sadly, as a result of her paralysis she
would not be able to return to work either. This was probably caused
by poor administration of her epidural which caused damage to her
spine. However, due to the fact that there’s no evidence of this, no
one is willing to take responsibility.
The prognosis wasn't good and the doctors doubted she'd ever be
able to walk again. Mpho herself sunk into depression. Through
painstaking sessions with her physiotherapist and one more surgery she
regained some mobility and slowly started making improvements.
She continued to use her wheelchair from 2014 until May 2018
and in June 2018, Mpho walked, with the assistance of a walking frame,
into an interview room where I met her for the first time. She was
like sunshine walking into that room. I had no idea the true struggle
that paved her journey to get to that room that day.
Now, a year and a bit later I have seen her grow and blossom as
an individual. Mpho continues to thrive in her learnership with the
aspiration of full-time employment, which considering her situation is
not a guarantee. She makes our workplace a happier place by just being
there and you'd struggle to find a more hardworking person around!
Mpho still has
regular check-ups with the doctors and is unfortunately not able to
afford private healthcare. The government hospital she attends has not
been able to provide her with a much-needed MRI scan for several
months. She still struggles to walk and is constantly in pain every
day but needs this MRI scan in order to determine the full extent of
degradation in her movement so that proper pain management can happen
and corrective measures can be taken to hopefully alleviate some of
the strain on her back.
She needs to see a doctor at the private hospital for a
consultation and then eventually have the MRI scan done. This is a
costly endeavour for a learner with Mpho's limited means.
So, you see, this is why we need to raise these funds urgently
so that Mpho can get the scan and get on her way with as little pain
as possible. Every little bit counts, and I'd like to urge you to give
whatever amount you're able to.
Thanking you in advance for helping me help Mpho!
