On June 8th our lives changed forever as my best friend and husband, Jim, decided to try out a friend’s dirt bike (a street legal, racing bike) by taking a short ride down our country road. He went down the road, turned around, and as he came back, increased the speed of the bike.
As he came back home, no one knows what happened, but he failed to make the slight curve in the road, going off-road with the bike landing in one direction, and Jim going airborne before landing on a pile of large rocks. He was knocked unconscious as the back of his head sustained a severe injury. He incurred a broken scapula and lacerations to the right side of his body, including his knee, which were minor in comparison to the head injury.
He was airlifted to the ER where emergency surgery was performed with a craniectomy to relieve swelling of the brain on his left side. It seemed like a surreal nightmare to hear surgeons say how “serious” this was and the words, “brain bleed” and “swelling of the brain” will forever be engrained in my mind.
The next day, another brain surgery was performed at the discovery of a damaged major blood vessel on the right side near the brain stem. A clot was removed and the skull flap was put back. He made it through both surgeries and was in the critical care trauma unit for several weeks in a coma.
Over the next three and a half months, Jim remained comatose, but made progress. In that time, he also endured setbacks, including MRSA. His progress included chewing some ice during speech therapy, moving his left arm and legs, and he had his brain flap put back.
Jim was moved to skilled nursing and slowly began to “wake up” and make small steps of progress. He battled illness from late November through January, where he was hospitalized 3 times.
Jim remains on a feeding tube, is chair-bound, and unable to make audible communication. February has seen great strides with Jim beginning to eat soft foods while remaining on his feeding tube and talking in sentences with muttered speech.
There is still much work to be done - learning to walk, audible speech, learning personal care and more time for the brain to heal and nerves to grow. He has been agitated and frustrated, unintentionally hurting folks at times, but we believe this to be part of the injury and hope it will go away over time.
We appreciate any support that can be given as we strive to give Jim the skilled therapy he needs to have a chance to be independent. Only God knows what lies ahead as we travel this journey in faith as he guides us.
We humbly ask for support and prayers as medical bills come in and we are facing the last of insurance dollars in the next couple of months. Jim will need thousands of dollars in continued therapy that we will not be able to pay, plus some transportation costs.
Thank you, friends and champions for Jim!
We love you,
Julie
