UBC Outlaws hasn't added a story.
Trinity Western University (TWU) is a private Christian university in Langley, BC, that requires all its students to sign a Community Covenant that actively discriminates against LGBTQ people. By signing it, students agree not to have any sexual relationships outside of heterosexual marriage, and students can be disciplined and even expelled for breaking this promise. TWU wants to open a law school that will require signing the Covenant as part of its admission policy.
The BC Court of Appeal will hear an appeal in June about whether TWU's proposed law program should be approved by the Law Society, even though it discriminates against LGBTQ individuals. The case was brought by TWU as a challenge to the Law Society of BC’s decision not to approve their proposed law school. In an October 2014 referendum, 5,951 BC lawyers (74% of voters) voted to deny TWU approval as a faculty of law, and the Law Society followed that decision.
This litigation affects the rights of all LGBTQ people in BC.
Who we are and why we are in this fight
We are a coalition of LGBTQ organizations - three LGBTQ law student organizations (Outlaws UBC, Outlaws UVic, Outlaws TRU) and QMUNITY, BC's Queer resource centre. We need to raise funds to help us intervene in the case.
This case is especially important to the OutLaws groups, organizations that support queer law students and work to foster a queer-positive learning environment at Canadian law schools. It is also a vital cause for QMUNITY, a not-for-profit community organization committed to improving the lives of queer people in Vancouver (www.qmunity.ca).
We want to make sure that the Court of Appeal hears the perspectives of LGBTQ people in court. We want to keep entrance to BC's legal profession free of discrimination and equally accessible to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation.
We believe that discriminating against queer people should bar TWU from running a law school that will provide opportunities to future lawyers and judges in BC. This was an important factor for the Law Society to consider in making its decision. Being admitted to law school is already a very competitive process that is harder for marginalized people, and allowing a law school to effectively prevent LGBTQ people from attending harms queer people and the diversity of the legal profession.
Please donate today to protect the rights of LGBTQ people and ensure that they have equal access to a law school education.
