Kevin Barry hasn't added a story.
Michael from Blarney, Co. Cork, Ireland was born in November 2012
with a rare genetic condition called Aqueduct Stenosis which resulted
in Michael suffering from hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is a build up of fluid in the ventricles of the
brain. The devastation caused by this build up of fluid has left
Michael with global developmental delays. He had his first surgery at
just 5 days old up in Temple Street Childrens Hospital where a VP
shunt was put in place to drain the fluid from his brain.
Michaels Mum Orla said "The night before his surgery I
made a promise to him - if he showed me signs that he wanted to walk
or talk I would do anything and everything for him. "
Michael will require specialised treatment in order to help him
walk. We hope to be able to attend a specialist physiotherapy centre
in Co. Limerick. We Also hope to raise funds For Michael to receive
cranial re-constructive surgery
All money raised will only go to financially supporting Michael
attend the First Steps clinic Limerick and to aid his physio at home
with essential specialised equipment.
Michael has other problems related to his hydrochephalus he has
epilepsy which is controlled by medication. Michael is fed through a
PEG tube which was surgically implanted in directly into his abdomen.
Unfortunately due to his condition the co-ordination of his swallow is
affected and Michael is unable to eat food normally as he is at risk
of aspirating (i.e. food and fluids can enter the lungs when being swallowed).
In the future we hope Michael will be able to receive cranial
re-constructive surgery. As a direct result of the build up of the
fluid in his brain the plates of Michaels skull were miss shaped and
Michael also suffered from plagiocephaly. It is our hope that this re
constructive surgery will help in Michaels development by allowing
more room for his brain to go and a more natural shape into which it.
