Sally Winstanley-Burridge hasn't added a story.
Fourteen year old Rowan and his mum,Sally are going to Zimbabwe to join with Vanavevhu-Children of the Soil working with young people orphaned by AIDS.
We need your help to raise £2500 for the materials and equpment we will be taking with us, flights and living costs. Vanavevhu provides child heads of households with assistance with the cost of utilities, ensuring regular food supplies, education and with skills and training development. The young people are learning bee-keeping, candle making, mushroom cultivation and are running and developing a market garden. In a country with high unemployment there is a need for young people to be equipped with skills and personal resources to make their own way in life and to fulfil the potential within.
The money raised will enable us to train the young people in making preserves, turning their excess produce into a marketable commodity and in using knitting and patchwork as a potential source of income.
Jam Pots And Purls was set up in 2013 to raise money for a skill share trip in January this year, and having tapped into their natural creativity and abilities, the Children of the Soil are hungry for more. http://www.jampotsandpurls.org.uk
In addition to building on the skills acquired during the last trip, we will be helping to expand the growing areas enabling them to produce vegetables commercially, establishing new permaculture beds, irrigation and much-needed water storage systems
The success of Vanavevhu to date has shown the need for someone to believe in the power of youth. These young people have taken on responsibilities beyond their years, providing for the practical, emotional and financial needs of their younger siblings and extended family members. We will not just be sharing skills and knowledge but dreams too, giving words of encouragement and support where needed. We will be joining with the team at Vanavevhu in filling the gaps where parents once stood and in helping these young people to grow into strong, resourceful adults.
To raise funds we are selling homemade jams and chutneys, vegetable seedlings, produce from our own garden and patchwork kits. Rowan will be undertaking a sponsored climb up Snowdon and we will be holding coffee mornings, cream teas and other fundraising events during the year.
Please help us to reach our target so that we can take skills to where they will make a difference.
Many thanks, Rowan and Sally
