We are hoping to raise money to pay for veterinary care for two former street dogs; we call them Pretty Girl and Brother. They have lived for years on the streets of Nashville, Tennessee, sleeping in culverts when it didn’t rain, foraging for food by local dumpsters, and dodging heavy traffic in the streets. The pair of them are inseparable. We need to raise money to pay for veterinary treatment, as they have just been rescued from their life on the streets. They were seen by the vet this past Saturday right after their rescue and he gave us the following information: Brother is about 8. He has no front teeth and his canine teeth are broken. He fought having the rest of his mouth examined as he has never been touched. His back left leg has a severe old knee fracture. He has severe cataracts in both eyes which limits his vision to minimum light and shadows. He is deaf. He is heartworm positive and has Ehrlichiosis, both of which are treatable. Pretty Girl is about 2 and is heartworm negative (hooray!!!). At the vet’s she was touched and petted for the first time. Both dogs were given a full set of shots. They are now in foster care and are a little bewildered at not having to wander around parking lots or forage for food, but they seem to be settling in OK.
The initial vet bill for the off-hours exam, testing and shots was just under $500. Spaying and neutering will be about $300. The heartworm treatment for Brother will run about $500 - $750. In whatever order will work best for him, Brother has to get through the heartworm treatment and the doggie dentist to see what can be done for his poor mouth. The damage is so severe that it probably is causing infection constant pain. Some teeth are broken at the gumline and others are broken in half. We have not seen the severity of the back yet but figure a rough estimate for the teeth is $500. And eventually, if anything could be done to give him some vision during his remaining years, that would be fantastic.
So our initial goal is to raise $2,000 to provide this treatment. The vet clinic – Countryside Animal Hospital in Mt. Juliet, TN – has done this before and has agreed to accept and keep donations on their account for treatments. So please help out if you can -- these two dogs are a testament to life. They have made it this far despite all sorts of risks and adversities and deserve lives where they don’t have to worry about traffic, being chased, or being shot at.
