Gene Majowski hasn't added a story.
On October 2nd, we held a benefit social in honor of David Leitch,
with proceeds going towards spina bifida research. The event was short
notice, as no one expected David to pass, but plenty still showed up
for a great cause in honor of a great kid.
I may not have known David as long as some, but I had the chance
to spend a lot of time with him over the last few years. My van almost
became a safe haven for him, where anything went. To say David was
like a brother to me wouldn't be accurate. He was a brother. He was
family to all of us.
From the conversations he and I had, as well as through his aunt
Nancy and through media, it was well known that the Winnipeg Blue
Bombers played a huge part in saving a boy who never knew what
happiness felt like. The friendships he made with the organization
helped a sad boy turn into a very happy man.
Having said that, I'd like to officially announce our intentions
in creating the David Leitch Bomber Buddy Foundation.
While still too early to provide full details, as we've yet to
establish all contacts, the goal of the foundation is to be able to
buy a minimum of 20 season tickets for the Bombers each year. Those
tickets would be given to children who are disadvantaged physically,
mentally or financially, and their families.
Each Bomber home game, Dignity Taxi would bring the families to
IG Field where they'd take in a game, have food and drinks, and if
possible, get some Bombers gear to take home. At the end of each
season, some of the money left would go towards buying tickets for the
following year, with the remainder being donated to the Children's
Hospital in David's name.
If the Bomber organization allows it, we'd like to bring the
kids and their families to IG Field well before game time so they can
meet the team, take pictures and hang out until they're escorted to
their seats. We've all seen how much spending time with the Bombers
changed David's life, so why not give other kids that same opportunity
on his behalf?
Dignity Taxi, myself, my wife Sabrina and my son Joshua will be
donating $500 to get things started, and David's aunt Nancy has
generously offered to donate $1,000 towards this cause. Together, we
can help create an incredible foundation that will help change the
spirit of many kids, as well as keep David alive within the community
that meant so much to him.
In the coming weeks and months, I'll be updating this page as
much as possible, letting everyone interested know what our progress
is. If you’re interested in making a donation, you can message me
directly for details, or you can make your donation here on FundRazr.
David did a lot for all of us. He inspired us to want to be
better people, he made sure those around him were always laughing and
having a good time, and he ultimately helped teach us what life is and
should be about. We can’t thank him or repay him enough, but I think
we owe it to him to give back to others the way he gave to all of us.
