As many of you are already aware, I am going to the Dominican Republic with a team of medical professionals and nursing students from Rutgers School of Nursing in an effort to provide healthcare services, support and education in under served areas. We will be setting up clinics in churches, schools and other public buildings and will see between 300-700 people a day with an aim to improve health promotion and chronic disease management specific to this population.

I am a part of a team of 20 nursing students at Rutgers University and we are looking to raise funds in order to purchase medical and personal hygiene supplies to provide for the many families we will be caring for. Any amount you're wiling to donate is appreciated SO much! If you are unable to donate money but would still like to help, we are collecting items such as bars of soap, 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes (children and adult), toothpaste, washcloths, brushes or combs, deodorant, children's vitamins, children's Tylenol, children's Benadryl, cloth diapers, children or infant clothing, flip flops, sanitizer, etc.

Major Health Needs/Health Burdens:
• Occupational hazards of rice field/agricultural
workers
• Chronic, often-undiagnosed diseases such as
diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis
• Accidents and injuries related to dangers of
highway proximity
• Lack of openness regarding HIV/AIDS
prevention/education
• Lack of sewage disposal
• Poor sanitation (e.g. hand washing, washing food,
lack of shoes especially for children)
• Non-potable water/ inconsistent access to clean
drinking water
• Infectious disease such as parasites and urinary tract
infections related to poor water quality and lack of
sanitation
• Compromised nutrition related to residents' lack of
access to fresh fruits and vegetables
• Residents' inability to afford formal health care
and/or transportation to/from formal health care
