We hope you don't mind but we would like to draw your attention to our son Sam's intention to spend a month in April researching the grave injustice which is being inflicted on the indigenous people of Greenland by the Danish Government.
E-Mail by Sam Lowe

In the April of 2013 I will be heading to Greenland for a month in order to complete a research project highlighting the injustices being inflicted on the indigenous Greenlandic population by current Danish mineral policy. This report will be used to start an international campaign pushing for transformative change at a national level. This project will be the first time that the exclusionary policies of the colonial Danish government have been fully documented. It will highlight the devastating impact of these policies on the livelihood of native Greenlanders.

Fair Jewellery Action will take the lead on this campaign in close association with the Greenlandic 16th August Union.

A small miners association, the 16th August Union, was founded in Greenland by local citizens after a group of Inuit collecting ruby out on their own land, were forcibly removed by the Home Rule Government. This was done in compliance to the wishes of international mining companies. In 2008 the 16 August Union organised a number of public rallies calling for an inclusive mining law that enshrined indigenous rights in the heart of Greenlandic mining law. To support this they ran a public petition that secured over 4000 signatures from within a dispersed island population of 56,000.

This desperately needed campaign requires further institutional strengthen and capacity building. This report will aim to kick start this process by making key recommendations on how to strengthen civil society groups in Greenland to have a stronger voice in mineral policy making.

Request for support

Although plans have been finalised for when I am out in Greenland, including office space and accommodation, I still need to raise a further £1000 to cover flights and expenses. I appreciate that this is a hard time for many people but if you feel that this is something you would consider supporting monetarily or would simply like to request further information then I would ask you to contact me at

Kind Regards,
