Hello! My name is Jonathan and I have a passion for public service as it relates to emergency preparedness and disaster response. I'd like your help in paying for a week-long first-responder class that starts January 3.

I'm a soldier in the Texas State Guard (TXSG) and an member of the City of Dallas CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and Denton County CERT. The TXSG is an all-volunteer, generally unpaid branch of the Texas Military Force (alongside the Army National Guard - who do get paid). We have to pay for all of our equipment, uniforms, gas (to get to drill/training), etc. CERT is also an all-volunteer organization but it's civilian based (and no compensation.) Both of these organizations are activated in times of large-scale incidents or disasters and the purpose is to provide aid to individuals, whether it be via shelter setup/management, individual first-aid, wide-area search, or setting up points-of-distributions (PODs).

One thing these have in common is that we can operate in conditions where emergency services (e.g., 911) are not available or otherwise limited. While I do have first aid training, I wanted something more extensive and I found the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. It's an intensive, 8-day course geared at providing the training necessary to stabilize and transport badly-injured persons in areas where common infrastructure may not be readily available.

Ultimately, my involvement in these public service activities costs me significant time and money. I do it because I enjoy it and I want to help others in need. You can help me help others by helping to offset the costs of this course, which is $695 that I'd be paying out of pocket. I've already signed up and charged the course on my credit card so it's definitely happening. I added in the estimated payment processing fees, bringing the amount I'm asking for to $765.

The WFR certification is through Wilderness Medical Associates International. You can learn more about it here: http://www.wildmed.com/wilderness-medical-courses/first-response/wilderness-first-responder.php

Any little bit helps, whether it's $5, $15, $25, or more. I do appreciate it!
