Introduction

In Ceramics 3, at Aloha High School, students grow from being clay enthusiasts to young professionals. One of the most captivating techniques ceramicists can learn is how to safely use gold luster (22K) on their finished pieces. It is a skill that few high school students even dream of learning.

A vented spray booth will allow trained students to safely apply gold luster during class. While gold is gently painted onto surfaces, the vapor from the solvents has a strong odor that requires ventilation. Currently, we can only apply the luster outside, after school. This limits who can attend a workshop (students are often busy with sports, jobs, family, etc.) meaning that many Ceramics 3 who want to learn this process are out of luck if they have after-school commitments. 

Aloha students are directly supporting this project through proceeds from our Ceramics 3 Sale. This is a bi-annual event where students in Ceramics 3 make professional ware to sell to Aloha High School students and staff. All proceeds of our sale go towards the purchase of specialty items used only in Ceramics 3. Purchasing supplies from the proceeds of the sale allows students to learn about making smart investments and maintaining profit margins. With the addition of the spray booth, students will now be able to add gold luster to the list of supplies!
