Nourish our Neighborhood:
Become a Friend of the St. Johns Farmers Market!
The St. Johns Farmers Market is a core part of community life here in St. Johns. Each season, we bring 30-40 vendors to our downtown main street area for 24 weeks of awesome food, live music, demonstrations, and kids activities. We also organize programs like our Veggie Vouchers and SJFM Food Bucks to ensure that all community members have access to fresh and local food. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we would love your help sustaining our market and ensuring that we can nourish our neighborhood for years to come!
Ways to become a friend of the market:
-
Make a donation.Your contribution will help us support our food equity programming at the market, including our Veggie Voucher and SNAP matching programs. For example, a $10 donation will help us match a family's food budget for the week. You can donate online or by sending a check made payable to the St. Johns Center for Opportunity to: 8250 N Lombard Street, Portland, OR 97203.
- Take the challenge. As a part of our 10 year celebration, we encourage you to raise $10 from 10 friends in 10 days. You can download our challenge guide here. Challenge participants and anyone who donates $10 or more, will be entered to win sweet local prizes including:
- Massage from Blue Marigold Massage
- 1 month of classes at CrossFit Blue House
- Waxing or Threading + eye serum at Esthibar
- Facial + Reflexology session at Breathe
- Yoga in the park from Delicious Life Wellness
- Haircut + product at the Parlour
3. Sign up to volunteer. We rely on volunteers to help with a variety of tasks at the market such as set-up, breakdown, and running our Info Booth. Click here to sign up.
About our Food Equity work:
SJFM FOOD BUCKS: A SNAP MATCHING PROGRAM
SJFM Food Bucks provides SNAP shoppers with a dollar-for-dollar match (up to $10 per week) to buy additional groceries at the market.
How it works
To access the SJFM Food Bucks program, SNAP participants simply
swipe their Oregon Trail card at the market information booth in
return for tokens to be used at the market. For every $1 of SNAP funds
redeemed at the market, a matching $1 in SJFM Food Bucks is provided
(up to a $10 match each visit) to purchase additional SNAP eligible
items from local farmers and producers.
In 2017, the St. Johns Farmers Market was the only market in town to grow its SNAP customer base and see increased SNAP sales.
VEGGIE VOUCHER PROGRAM
The Peninsula Veggie Voucher program distributes $30 in vouchers during the market season to low-income community members to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. We distribute the vouchers through strategic partnerships with local social service organizations like the Multnomah County Health Clinic, Community of Hope, Bridge Meadows, Schrunk Towers, Village Gardens and more. Currently, we have 117 households enrolled in the program for the 2018 season.
"I like that it limits it to just vegetables. For me that’s an incentive to eat more vegetables. I’ve lowered my A1C. I’m a cancer survivor so my doctors are really on me about eating more vegetables. I have the best recipe for vegetable soup than anyone in the world now. I get my vouchers and I make a huge pot and eat it every day." - Veggie Voucher participant
