Ella's Lovely Family and Friends! hasn't added a story.
Hello dear friends and family! Ella here. Over the past year, I've started working at an incredible harm reduction center called the Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction (HACHR). HACHR is a unique community that strives to advocate for the dignity, equity, and autonomy of people who use drugs. We provide a huge variety of services including HIV/ HEP C testing, harm reduction info, COViD-19 testing (coming soon), suboxone and subutex case management, overdose prevention, resource referrals, syringe exchange and safer use supplies, outreach, and food and clothes just to name a few! Our amazing peer workers lead us with their lived experience and expertise.
As always, we are up against opposition both from community members and local officials. Harm Reduction is a radical framework, and people who use drugs are deeply stigmatized and dehumanized in our society. Unfortunately, there are many people who don't understand the importance of our work, and the real life saving impact it has in our community every day. Recently, our city council made the devastating decision to ban our syringe exchange services within the city of Eureka, reducing access to clean syringes for many people. We hear daily about the negative impacts this has had on our participants' mental and physical health, including increased risk of sepsis, abscesses, fentanyl poisoning, and overdose. Although we are still able to provide exchange to folks outside of the Eureka area, many of our participants are located in Eureka and lack mobility. Furthermore, our outreach vehicle is in poor condition and makes remote services a bit difficult! The good news is that we have been doing constant negotiations and relationship building with the city of Eureka, and we are in the process of deciding on sites where we will be able to do mobile syringe exchange within Eureka! Now more than ever, we need a reliable and effective vehicle for mobile services.
The money we raise in this fundraiser will be going directly to the purchase of our new outreach vehicle that will serve as a mobile Harm Reduction clinic. We are super excited to start our new mobile exchange program within Eureka, and we will be starting as soon as next week.
Any and all donations during this time are super deeply appreciated! I also understand that this is a trying time for many of us, so if you don't have the means to donate, sharing this fundraiser with others is also an incredibly helpful option. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have about HACHR or our new mobile outreach clinic. I would love to talk to you more about our services and show you how beautiful our community is. The services we provide, especially clean syringes, narcan, and suboxone access, are literally life saving and we need to be able to provide them at all times. Your donation would make a huge difference in our participants' lives and the overall health and wellbeing of our community.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this, your support means the world to us. I'm so grateful to have a strong support network of friends and family to reach out to! And please don't hestiate to reach out to me with any questions or comments <3 I look forward to talking more with you!
much love,
Ella
In 7 years, HACHR has traveled all over Humboldt County, to provide outreach, support, services, and respect to unhoused individuals and people who use drugs. We travel hundreds of miles each week--meeting our participants where they are at, literally--to provide sterile syringe exchange services, overdose prevention supplies and education, hepatitis C testing and linkage to treatment, care coordination, compassion, and respect for our marginalized neighbors in Humboldt County. In 2020 alone, HACHR has played a part in reversing 145 overdoses, distributed over 2,400 naloxone kits and hundreds of hygiene and wound care kits, provided hot food and cold weather supplies to our unhoused neighbors, and supported over 75 individuals in enrolling in medication-assisted treatment--the majority of whom we met on outreach across the county.
As COVID-19 continues to push people who use drugs further out of stable housing and into the shadows, it is imperative that we continue to provide top-notch health and supportive care across Humboldt, and to do that, we need a mobile clinic.
A mobile clinic will allow HACHR staff to travel far and wide across remote and urban parts of Humboldt County, including hard-to-reach and marginalized communities, with everything they need to provide instant support and services: a space for HIV/HCV testing and meetings with case managers, enough storage for harm reduction supplies like syringes and naloxone, plumbing and electricity to store tests and supplies and charge tablets and participant devices, and a reliable engine that will keep us going for a hundred thousand miles and then some.
Every dollar raised will go directly to getting HACHR more mobile--purchasing a van, transforming it into a mobile clinic, paying for parking and storage, and getting it registered and insured. Gifts are fully tax deductible.
If you support harm reduction in Humboldt County, please consider getting us on the road with a donation, and sharing this with your networks! And watch this space--we'll be sharing updates and testimonials from our incredible HACHR community here.
PS: Fundrazr includes a "tip" on every gift to support its platform that is 100% optional--if you would like to change or remove your tip, click on "change tip amount" on the right hand side when you are making your contribution.
