Agric Power Africa hasn't added a story.
Agric Power Africa, Liberia.
Agric Power Africa is a non-profit organisation setup by Africans in the Diaspora to help Africans in the homeland to use agriculture to transform their countries, create Jobs, alleviate poverty and create wealth. Agric Power Africa provides the organisational structure, the expertise in all areas of agriculture for the members in Africa. We engage the services, expertise and technology of world leading players in agribusiness to create world class agro-industrial villages across the countries.
In Africa today, billions of USD have been spent by aide organisations to help the continent have food to eat. Most of the money is used to pay consultants. some to import food to Africa. The rest of the money is used to run projects in Africa that do not have continuity. After these projects are completed the people are left with some equipment to take care of themselves and they are not able to do this. This is how the billions of aides are spent.
Our flagship program is Growing Beyond the Smallholder Farmers. We believe that for Africans to feed themselves they must be trained and given the resources and mentoring to enable them grow beyond the smallholders to big farmers. They need right support to able to work in the various aspects of the food value chain.
Right now, the level of poverty in Africa is off records. Records
show that currently 23 million primary school-age children in Africa
attend classes hungry. The lack of adequate nutrition has not just
impacted on children’s ability to learn but also on their physical and
mental health (World Food Programme 2012). Poverty is a major
contributor in the high mortality rate of children in Africa as they
are unable to fight diseases or recover from illnesses due to poor
nutrition (UNICEF 2018).
Losing a child is very heart-wrenching
for any parent but what is even harder is that feeling of helplessness
while you watch your child die of hunger.
Poverty and unemployment go hand in hand. African children who
survive childhood poverty face an uphill task in securing gainful
employments as adults. Statistics show that Africa has the highest
rate of working poverty with people earning less than US$2 a day. At
the same time inflation rate is highest in African nations. Even
worse, the 10 million graduates churned out by over 668 universities
in Africa yearly do not have jobs. The Africa story is an endless
circle of poverty, the situation is very severe and set to get worse
as recent statistics have revealed that unemployment and poverty is on
the increase.
Therefore, Agric Power Africa was initiated to
change this narrative and to empower Africans to be proactive and take
charge of their own future. It is a monumental task, but we are
determined and committed to our goal of changing the poverty landscape
of Africa through agriculture by growing smallholder farmers to large
scale farmers.
Africa is seen as a key centre of agricultural production, the
gigantic continent has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land,
most of it are yet to be farmed. not only does the continent have the
potential to feed itself but it can also grow enough food to export to
other nations of the world. Yet, most farming activities in Africa are
on a very small scale. Also known as cold comfort farming, smallholder
farming is practice of farming a small piece of land over and over
again. It is the major cause of poverty, food scarcity and youth
unemployment in Africa. The small farms have poor soil quality due to
over farming and therefore yield little crop
Agric Power Africa will leverage on Africa’s combined potentials
of vast uncultivated arable farmlands, huge human resources and export
market to grow smallholder farmers to become large scale farmers. This
will increase the income per capita of the individual farmer, reduce
unemployment and move many families above the poverty line.
Why Should You Care?
Anybody that cannot feed his or her family will remain a slave.
The people that feed you will always control you. The major reasons of
poverty in Africa is due to lack of food. Most Africans are
malnutritioned. Therefore, they lack energy, lack of critical thinking
ability, reduced IQ and lack of self-confidence. These all result in
poverty. It is the end result, which is poverty that people often see
and wants to solve. But the root cause of all that poverty is lack of
food in the first place.
Most of the problem in Africa, including the violence could be traced back to food shortages. For example, “Protein-calorie malnutrition can cause cognitive impairments. For humans, "critical period varies from the final third of gestation to the first 2 years of life". Iron deficiency anaemia in children under two years of age likely affects brain function acutely and probably also chronically. Folate deficiency has been linked to neural tube defects.
Malnutrition in the form of iodine deficiency is "the most
common preventable cause of mental impairment in Africa. Even moderate
deficiency, especially in pregnant women and infants, lowers
intelligence by 10 to 15 I.Q. points, shaving incalculable potential
off a nation's development. The most visible and severe effects —
debilitating goitres, cretinism and dwarfism. It is estimated that 16
percent of the Africa people have at least mild goitre, a swollen
thyroid gland in the neck. A lot more suffer from nutrition related
health problems (UNICEF 2018).
Children who are mentally impaired become unintelligent adults
who cannot function well in the society and therefore cannot
contribute to the national development. They are easy target for
terrorism and strives. Good nutrition is key to a child’s survival,
health and development. Well-nourished children are better equipped to
grow and learn, to participate in and contribute to their communities,
and to be resilient in the face of disease, disasters, and other
global crises (UNICEF 2017).
Agric Power is determined to end the food insecurity in Africa, and Africans must take the lead in solving their own food problems. We cannot continue to bury our heads in the sand and wish away the devastating effect of hunger on the continent of Africa will go away, neither can we keep shifting the blame to other people or nations. It is African problem and the solution must be led by Africans.
