Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
Just when we think we have seen it all, we realize that we have not. Tannen's story is both a short story and an long story at the same time. The short story for Tannen, is that in honoring our commitment to take our dogs back at any time, in any condition, we are facing a bilateral pelvis fracture, the most expensive surgery we do, and the most difficult to fundraise for, for the 2nd time since March that 100% could have been prevented.
The long story is a bit longer. Tannen was adopted in December of 2017. Shortly thereafter, his family was not sure if it was a match. We understand that, sometimes it takes time for everyone to settle in. The family waffled back and forth about if they were going to keep Tannen. We understand that, it is an emotional decision to make.
Yesterday, Tannen got out of the house and was hit by a car, shattering his pelvis. We somewhat understand that....
His Mom took him to the vet, where x-rays revealed that Tannen had a horrific injury that would require an expensive and complex surgery to repair. Tannen's Mom then chose to bring Tannen home, lay him on a blanket, go to work, leaving him with a broken pelvis, and contact DRSF that she immediately needed to surrender him. That is where we run out of understanding.
Tannen's former mom's choices are hers to make, and we try with all our might not to pass judgment and mind our own beeswax, but when someone's else's choices result in a $6,500 hit to our War Chest when it likely could have been prevented, we are breathing deep, trying to take the moral high road, and have fingers and paws crossed that our community will help us through our 2nd broken pelvis and 3rd $6,000+ surgery in 6 weeks.
Our beeswax says that we stand behind our dogs and take them back at any time, in any condition, so that is what we did. Tannen was surrendered and transported to LeadER Animal Hospital where he is under the care of World Class Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Unis who will be putting Tannen's pelvis back together again this afternoon with a plate on one side of his pelvis and screws on the other.
We have asked for a lot already in 2018, and we are back again to ask your help to honor the commitment we have made to every dog we have placed over the course of the last decade. Every dollar gets us closer to to the finish line, and makes it possible for us to continue to be there and do the right thing for those who have no voice of their own <3
