!שלום   I’M SHLOMO GEWIRTZ here in יְרוּשָׁלַיִם coaching
new עוֹלִים with their Zionist dream and all those Jews abroad
who want to come but worry that once they get here, the job
market will greet them with a cheerful Israeli shrug and say,
“So… who do you know?”.

Sure, connections matter most. And even though we can’t find enough natives who’ve mastered American English, to compete here and succeed when everything seems stacked against you, you’ve got to know how to outsmart the hiring culture and snag the jobs they never post. It’s also a spiritual task. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks put it well: “Your talents are God’s gift to you; how you use them is your gift to God.”

Michal Cotler-Wunsh, former Knesset Member and activist,
gets more down to earth in telling me how much Western עוֹלִים
matter:

Lovely sentiments, סְבַּבַּא, but new עוֹלִים still need to show Israelis they have what we call a רֹאשׁ גָּדוֹל. Compared to the רֹאשׁ קָטָן who marks his limits, sets them in stone and puts up a sign saying, “Leave Me Alone”—the רֹאשׁ גָּדוֹל loves new challenges. He learns what he does best, gets out there to discover what others want and makes the שִׁידּוּךְ between the two. Whether through group workshops, videos, a podcast, and one-on-one tutoring, I help עוֹלִים rise to the occasion and tell the stories that make employers want to know more.
