Let\u2019s break down what Units of Impact are, why they matter, and how they can help you take your donor relationships to the next level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-unit-of-impact\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_Unit_of_Impact\"><\/span>What is a Unit of Impact?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Unit of Impact is a small, tangible, and specific outcome \u2014 something that may not seem like much on its own, but acts as a building block to move your charity closer to its greater goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Units of Impact <em>must <\/em>be focused on your beneficiaries or mission in order to be effective. Talking about how your charity itself will be impacted, while obviously also important, simply doesn\u2019t have the same power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should aim to make your UoI as compelling, attention-getting, or even dramatic as possible while <a href=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/posts\/crowdfunding-promotion-marketing-nonprofits-charities\">promoting your campaign<\/a>. Stay away from anything dull- or technical-sounding, even if it\u2019s actually important to your charity\u2019s mission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking practically, it\u2019s also important not to choose too many options for your UofI, as doing so can confuse your viewers and muddle your message. You\u2019ll also want to choose a memorable, high-quality image for each to help your donors visualize as clearly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-units-of-impact-in-action\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Units_of_Impact_in_Action\"><\/span>Units of Impact in Action<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two great examples of charities using Units of Impact to drive their missions forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/campaigns\/forests_without_frontiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forests Without Frontiers&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout their campaign, Forests Without Frontiers aims to inspire a specific action \u2014 planting trees. Everything from their CTA button, to the \u2018perks\u2019 offered for different donations, is described in terms of how many trees were planted. There\u2019s no mention of boring, overhead costs like web hosting, printing, or rent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24326 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/b.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/BlackGirlsGlobalExchange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Girls\u2019 Global Exchange<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black Girls Global Exchange is another charity that\u2019s broken down their mission into Units of Impact. This is particularly effective since their goal is so large \u2014 they\u2019re raising money to send Black girls from barriered communities on cultural learning trips to destinations like Eswatini and South Africa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve broken those larger goals down into much smaller, more achievable units. For example, $50 would pay for a program participant to visit a museum, while $125 would cover their passport application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"crowdfunding\" class=\"wp-image-24325 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/a.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-units-of-impact-so-powerful\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_are_Units_of_Impact_So_Powerful\"><\/span>Why are Units of Impact So Powerful?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach is so effective because it helps donors visualize the difference they made with their donation. Even though giving is an altruistic act, donors do get something out of it \u2014 on some level, they\u2019re motivated by the joy of knowing they helped someone else.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UoI maximizes that satisfaction for your audience. When donors feel that they made a measurable difference in someone\u2019s life, no matter how small, it gives them a sense of pride in, and ownership over, the difference they\u2019ve made.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communicating impact has always been important, but it\u2019s more prominent than ever today, in the Internet age. The younger generations, Gen Z and Millennials, expect honesty, transparency, and immediate access to information \u2014 and Units of Impact deliver that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UofI can also help with donor retention. The specificity and small scale of UoI gives donors a sense of involvement in your charity\u2019s day-to-day activities, rather than just a general sense of support for your mission. That means your donors are much more likely to stick around, becoming passionate advocates and active members of your community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-units-of-impact\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Use_Units_of_Impact\"><\/span>How to Use Units of Impact<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it makes sense to use Units of Impact when asking for donations \u2014 that\u2019s a strategy we always recommend, in the form of Perks and Wishlists. But UoI are a powerful addition to all your nonprofit\u2019s communications.
