The Black Light Foundation hasn't added a story.
The Black Light Foundation is an initiative that will become a nonprofit dedicated to building awareness and creating spaces for mental, spiritual, and physical health and wellness. After the loss of our mom, we saw a need to create spaces that otherwise don’t really exist.
Claudia was joy. She was happy, she was funny, and she was breathtaking. It sounds cliché, but she actually did light up a room. She made people smile; she created love in the atmosphere. She was a CrossFit athlete, and a respected member in her church community. She spent time nurturing her health, both inside and out. Nobody would have known she lived with depression if she didn’t tell them, and what made her so brave was that she did tell them. She spoke of her depression freely, in the way sicknesses are meant to be discussed. She was an advocate for change and she knew it was important not only for herself, but for others to be comfortable with obstacles that come with mental health and wellness.
Unfortunately, we lost her to suicide this May – but we did not lose her spirit. She left us with a purpose. She wanted us to create spaces of love on purpose, and build spaces for love on purpose. The Black Light Foundation will tackle the stigma of mental health, it will build awareness for the commonality of mental illnesses, it will connect the dots between those who suffer and those who can help, and it will help provide ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally and spiritually. It will encompass who she was, which is a light in the darkness. Hence, the name The Black Light Foundation.
We aim to build a foundation that will serve as a community and a light to others. Our calendar has already begun to fill with events and partnerships with other respectable organizations. We will be partnering with Vitality Fitness for a memorial workout that will receive donations to be administered to icuTalks – an organization with similar goals focused on breaking the stigma of mental health and nourishing mental wellness through spirituality. We hope to be a licensed nonprofit organization by October so that we can officially partner with icuTalks for an 8k in Claudia’s honor. We have already secured vendors and sponsorships and hope this event can mark the launch of The Black Light Foundation.
Through the foundation, we plan to address the mental health stigma through education and discourse. We intend to facilitate events that encourage honest conversations around mental health in order to increase comfortability discussing these topics on a larger scale. We will educate event attendees on statistics, signs and symptoms of various mental health conditions, proper terminology and language to use when referring to mental health concerns, and resources regarding access to care providers. We will partner with schools in order to build a foundation of knowledge around mental and physical health in the earlier years, allowing children to better understand the connection between the two.
Before we can be established as a nonprofit, we are required to purchase different licensing, insurance, trademarks and more and we are asking for monetary donations to assist with this process. Anything helps, and should you choose to do so, you can provide your donation here .
Thank you in advance for any kind of support and we look forward to connecting with you in the future.
