We are a volunteer based, nonprofit organization rooted in the community of Surrey, BC Canada.

We provide a wide variety of services and programs - all free of charge -  for those facing the end of their life, hospice and palliative care, as well as grief and bereavement support for adults, children and youth who have lost people they love.

We need your help to continue to offer these services and programs as the demand for us is higher than it has ever been and continues to grow daily in these challenging times.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 expected to continue into the summer, with no end in sight, our hospice society which relies on holding fundraising events as well as operating thrift stores has had to cancel all our events and close our stores. This has meant a loss of 40% in our organizational revenues.  This reduction in funding has placed the operations and indeed the very existence of our Society and our programs in jeopardy. Because of this, the Surrey Hospice Society is making changes to the way that funding is achieved.

Like many charitable organizations, the hospice society relies heavily on events and our thrift stores to raise the money we need. The cancellation of fundraising events and closure of our thrift stores could leave us on the brink of closure. These services are needed  more than ever before. We are a critical front line support service, and we are greatly needed in our community.

(Q&A) What is hospice care?

Hospice care refers to care given to a patient when medical treatment cannot offer a cure nor can it prevent further deterioration of the patient’s disease. The life expectancy of the patient may be less than six months. Under these circumstances, hospice care is given to alleviate the symptoms for the patient, and provide emotional support, spiritual and social care for both the patient and his/her family in order to improve their quality of life. Hospice Care neither hastens nor postpones death, but assists and supports the patient and family till the natural end of life.

Hospice means end of life care, not end of wishes.

Why is Surrey Hospice Society so needed?

In addition to hospice and palliative programs, Surrey Hospice Society provides support, education and community to those in bereavement. At this time of uncertainty, the whole world is facing loss, fears and anxiety. As we are asked to observe social distancing requirements, loss of employment and income instability, unable to find comfort in hugs and company of friends and family members, we need to recognize that what we are feeling is grief. We need to learn healthy ways to experience this grief and to get through what can be more than challenging. Surrey Hospice Society is here for everyone, free of charge. We are your companions for the journey.
