Can one person make a difference? They can if they have support from others.

That is why I'm asking for help to provide clothing and essentials for refugee and immigrant children. If you include your social media link with a donation of any amount, you'll get a very public shout-out of thanks. Contributors will also be listed when donations are given to the centers.

If you'd rather give directly to an organization, I encourage you to check out InterfaithWelcomeCoalition.org

My story...

Like most people, I've seen many images of children and families traveling north as they flee violence and poverty. As a teacher who has previously worked with refugees and homeless children, I find these images particularly heartbreaking. Anger and helplessness are not emotions I enjoy, so I asked myself - what can I do to help?

By coincidence, I happen to be traveling to Mexico in early September for work. During my journey southward, I will be visiting a few centers where volunteers work hard every day to provide assistance to refugees and other migrants in need. The people they serve have been traveling extremely long distances, often under dangerous conditions, and have little more than the clothing they were wearing when they left. Many children and families who have crossed the border have passed through detention centers, places the U.S. government argued are not required to provide essentials like toothbrushes or soap. Others have been left in limbo under the Remain in Mexico program and are being forced to stay in strange towns and cities for the next several weeks and months.

These families are in desperate need of basic essentials like underwear, socks, soap, and other hygienic supplies. None of the travelers you see in the news are carrying suitcases or diaper bags. At most, I've seen a random backpack or plastic bag, and they certainly aren't carrying detergent to wash the clothes they're wearing.

I don't have a lot these days, but I'd like to help as much as I can. That is why I'm asking my friends and family (and anyone else willing to help) to contribute funds to provide clothing and other essentials for as many kids as possible. Having communicated with a couple centers, my first priority will be buying children's underwear and socks. Personally, I believe these particular items should not be second-hand, so pooling resources is essential so I can buy in bulk to minimize the cost. It is important to me that any money I collect goes directly to those who need it most and in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

Thank you for reading my plea. I sincerely hope you will consider contributing to my cause. Even just a few dollars would mean the world to me, to the kids, and to their families. Our physical needs are our most essential and everyone deserves to feel clean.
