Four years ago, I used Fundrazr to publish my book, Abacus to smartphone: The evolution of mobile and portable computers. Now the time for printed books is behind us, and I'm ready to put it all online!

Rather than simply posting the text, I decided to build a modern web interpretation:

  • There will be a 21st-century version of the famous "computer bushy tree" to graphically explain the evolution from, well, the abacus to the smartphone!
  • All of the stories from the book will be available in a drill-down form, so that viewers can skim the high-level story or open increasingly detailed levels of explanation in whatever order they prefer.
  • There will be a good amount of new content that wasn't in the 2015 printed book.
  • Starting from now (june 27, 2019), I estimate that it will take about a month to build the new website. As a freelance writer, I need to fund my own time. That's why I am raising funds again.
  • Anyone can (in theory) request the original paper book through their local library or purchase it on Amazon. However these are barriers to entry for some people. Other people (especially children) learn better using a modern interactive site than a boring old printed book. Thus the reason to support this fundraiser isn't just to enable version 2.0 of the story, it's also to help many more people have access to the story in the first place.
  • I do not anticipate there being any "premium" parts of the new website: I am ready to make it all cost-free. However, to thank funders, I will make the site password-protected for the first 30 days (approximately the entire month of August 2019). Only funders will have access.
  • There will be a thank-you page where I list all funders. Future readers will see who see and appreciate your names.
