Matilda was found on the side of the road after being hit by a car. With her many broken bones, she was sent to us so we could get her the help she needs to survive, heal and recover. Will you help us get her on the path to recovery?

Last week we got a call about a chicken that was found laying on the side of the road after having been hit by a car.  Both legs were crushed and have multiple fractures requiring surgery. When her initial rescuers believed this hen, Matilda, should be humanely euthanized, we stepped up to give her a chance to live her life, as she so clearly wants to do.  Even while in pain, Matilda is clearly very interested in living, so we're here to help her do just that with help from you and our most amazing and wonderful veterinarian and his staff.

Matilda's x-rays showed multiple breaks in both legs.

X-Ray

She needed surgery right away for the best chance at recovery.  Her initial costs are $310 due to the fact that our amazing veterinarian is very compassionate and wants to help birds in need, also.  Matilda was successfully operated on for her Femur and is now sporting an external fixator with pins in her bone.
Pins

Both legs are in splints to support her bilateral fractured tibias. Her Femur is supported with pins and an external fixator.

Matilda is looking good and is getting plenty of medication for pain and she is eating well.
Next week, Matilda will go back to the vet for a re-check and to evaluate the need for additional surgery.
At this time, it is unclear whether or not Matilda will be able to walk again.  In the meantime, we are adjusting her positions throughout the day and we alternate in and out of an immobile sling.  In order to begin using her legs again in the future, she will need a walker.  The walker will run around $375 from K9 Carts.  Matilda will also need hormone treatment to cease egg production so her bones may heal without the added drain on her body.  Laying eggs requires so much of her body's resources like calcium, which she needs to heal her bones.  Hormone treatment for Matilda for the next six months will cost $170.00

Please help Matilda receive what she needs to keep recovering and work towards living an amazing life.
