SCRATCH (Saving Carolina Rescue Animals To Caring Homes) Rescue hasn't added a story.
SCRATCH (Saving Carolina Rescue Animals To Caring Homes) Rescue is a 501c3 rescue based out of Conover, NC. We are a very small group of a few dedicated volunteers responsibly rescuing dogs in need in North Carolina. Our purpose is to help unwanted, needy, neglected dogs. We do this by providing medical care and rehabilitation to the dogs in our rescue and carefully screening potential adopters.
We received an email from Iredell County Animal Shelter in Statesville, NC about a 2 year old male terrier/chihuahua mix that was now in their custody after being hit by a car. A good samaritan saw the incident take place and scooped him up and took him to the emergency vet for initial care.
They stabilized him and treated him for shock through IV's, antibiotics and pain medications. Animal Control was contacted and he spent a week at the animal shelter while waiting on an owner to come forward to claim him but sadly nobody ever showed up.
We pulled this sad, scared broken little guy into our rescue and named him Landis.
His right eye was irreversibly damaged in the accident and had to surically be removed. He also had several lacerations on his body that had to be sutured.
Dr. Whitted at Conover Veterinary Hospital examined him and took x-rays. His injuries are much more extensive than first suspected. He has bruising on his testicles and right rear leg, right and left sacro-iliac luxation, right iliac fracture, right pubis fracture, pulmonary contusions and chest bruising. The many breaks and dislocations in his pelvis is causing his pelvic canal to be narrowed which has led to some difficulty in passing bowel movements.
She sedated him and attempt to rectally adjust the pelvis with no success because the bones have already begun the healing process. These broken bones cannot be left to just heal crooked on their own because he will have problems walking and passing bowel movements as well as constant pain.
The next step is orthopedic surgery. We are in the process of working with a vet to set that up. They have quoted a price of approximately $5,000.00. The vet has stated that they are going to have use several plates on his pelvis in order to align the bones to promote proper healing. We have to come up a deposit of $1,000.00 prior to the surgery.
We feel this boy deserves a chance at a normal, happy life. Since his injuries were much more involved than first was thought, we need help with donations to make this happen. We made a promise to him that we would take care of him and we intend to keep that promise.
