“Bearing Bloodlines: Ancestral Invocations," a ritual performance created by Tannis Hugill and Barbara Bickel, intends to bring healing to the legacy of unprocessed trauma the performers’ European ancestors brought to North America. This fundrazr will support the production of the independent film that will be premiered in early 2026. [We are no longer using the additional performers that are noted in the video below]
DONATION REQUESTS
Barbara and Tannis are seeking financial support to complete the production, to pay a technical support team for the performance, documentation and video creation, and to rent rehearsal space, and host screenings (see detailed budget below).
Your financial contribution will serve as a supportive witness to this offering and increase the possibility of others' awakening to their own generational traumas and gifts.
Donors offering $50 or more are offered their choice of gifts such as attending a premiere screening, acknowledgment in the video credits, a personal ZOOM conversation with the artists, or on-line workshops that explore trance practices.
We invite you to give as much as you are able. Every single gift matters as your donation will ensure the completion of our labour of love which has consumed us for more than six years.
NOTE: Donations less than $50 are separate from the gifts and these donors can buy a ticket to the screening closer to the dates.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RITUAL PERFORMANCE
The project incorporates ritual, embodied trance, storytelling, and ancestral puppets to connect and reconcile with the creators’ ancestors. It serves as an initiatory creative model for difficult personal and collective acts of reconciliation between settler descendants and their ancestors. Thus, it seeks to humbly address the traumatic impact of settler colonialism on Indigenous peoples and their lands.
This ritual performance video is also intended as a teaching, in particular for descendants of settlers disconnected from their own ancestors, and original lands. In our experience we learned that our traumas could be healed when witnessed by ancestral guides, each other, and the audience. This can lead to a vibrant source of creation and peace-building uniting humans across time and space.
Held within the container of sacred space, the performers honour the presence of two larger- than- life handmade puppets, each representing an ancient ancestral guide. These inspirited guides witness their descendants and dance. Aided by familial hand-crafted relics, such as shawls and doilies, the performers enter the realms of their ancestors through embodied trance. Their stories unfold.
The project will result in screenings followed by a Talkback with the creators. We designate the film with a PG rating.
