If you ring an ambulance with chest pains or another potentially life threatening complaint, how quickly will they get to you?

The target is to reach 75% of these types of calls within 8 minutes and last year there were 2.95 million such calls

Assuming that the Ambulance hits their target, this meant around 737,500 people waited more than 8 minutes. If you or your loved ones were one of those 737,500 people I daresay you would be very pleased to see a Community First Responder

Community First Responders or CFR’s are volunteers who are based from home and support the regular Ambulance Service by attending serious and life threatening 999 calls in and around their community to provide the earliest possible intervention for patients in the first few minutes until the arrival of an Ambulance.

CFR’s are trained in the use of Automated External Defibrillators and the treatment and control of a wide range of potentially life threatening conditions and particularly in the case of heart attack it has been identified that their early intervention can result in a significant improvement in prognosis.

The responder program has proved to be so effective that it is being extended and some responders are now being given more extensive training to allow them to deal with a much wider range of conditions and provide lifesaving treatment and pain relief before the Ambulance arrives.

Whilst the responders and the Paramedics who train them are happy to give their time freely, the kits they use are expensive to purchase and there are ongoing costs for communications equipment etc., all of which needs to be raised by the teams.

So, in an effort to part you from your hard earned cash, I am going to climb Kilimanjaro.

I have covered the cost of the trip myself, so every penny donated will go towards purchasing kits, renting communication equipment, training more responders and will ultimately save lives.

I know there are a large number of very worthy causes out there but the CFR programme makes an immediate impact on people’s lives and let’s face it, you could be contributing to a cause which one day may literally save your, or a loved one’s life
