Scott Girvan hasn't added a story.
Hello my friends.
There are times in our lives when we need help. This is one of those times for a friend of ours; Ken Abrams. I'm quite sure that you know Ken simply because you have taken a moment to read this.
Here's the background information;
In the early eighties my friend Ken was struck in the eye during a snowball fight at recess at D.L. Beckwith middle school. It was just another typical winter day in New England until the ambulance broke the sound of kids playing with its sirens and flashing lights. The frozen chunk of ice left over from the plows the night before tore his cornea and required doctor visits, medicines and a lengthy school absence. At the time, none of this was really all that bad, the classmate who threw the chunk of ice visited him at home; as did the assistant principle and Ken later returned to school with a cool story to tell his friends.
For a few decades, life continued along normally with only the most minor of inconveniences regarding sight, something that was to be expected anyway since both his parents’ required corrective lenses. Fast forward to almost eight months ago when Ken woke up one day and notice a distinct difference in his vision; a haze that wasn’t previously there and upon closing his left eye, he could no longer see. A visit to his family eye doctor was in order and she informed him that he had developed a traumatic cataract as result of the injury so many years ago. His doctor then sent him to a surgeon who did a complete examination including an ultrasound to measure the eye and look for any other complications not visible; you see not only is Ken unable to see out of the eye but the doctors cannot see into it without this procedure.
The results were positive, at least in the way that his eye is healthy enough for the procedure and can be corrected with a very high probability that he will fully recover his sight. The cataract was however what they call a mature cataract and he has also suffered some angle recession; in layman’s terms, with the eye no longer sending good information to the brain, the muscles are becoming lazy causing the eye to drift.
Ken has made his living in the construction industry, and as a licensed carpenter in his mid-forties changing careers is not much of an option. Without two fully functioning eyes his depth perception has suffered greatly, a carpenter who can no longer strike a nail with a hammer isn’t exactly a highly sought after worker, especially in the current market where there are many more young and able men looking for work. Ken’s second job as a professional miniaturist has too suffered greatly; being able to assemble small parts and paint them has now gone from being one of his lifelong passions, to a source of frustration and struggle.
To make matters worse, he doesn’t have the health coverage to cover the corrective surgery needed and it isn’t cheap. With all of the procedures, tests, surgery and follow ups, he will be out of pocket to the tune of just under five thousand dollars. As a single dad of an eleven year old boy who splits his time with his mom this is a great deal of money to come up with in such short notice and that brings me here.
Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
