Urgent Dogs Palm Beach County hasn't added a story.
On October 23rd, at 4AM, a nameless
stray dog was hit by a car. When Animal Control opened, they were
called to pick her up and brought her back to the shelter. Upon
examination, it was determined that her injuries surpassed what they
were physically capabale of handling. A subsequent rescue request was
sent out to all local rescues at around 11AM, pleading for someone to
pick up this sweet girl and get her the vet care she so desperately
needed. Due to the extend of her injuries and the amount of pain she
was in, the shelter didn't find it humane to keep her alive past 4PM,
giving the community 5 hours to ban together and help Isla. Despite
the urgency and her sweet demeanor, no local rescue was willing to
take her in and that is where the true nature of Palm Beach County
showed. A local vet, who was about to leave for vacation and was in
the middle of treating another dog with heartworm that came from
PBCACC that no rescue would take, jumped into action. A shelter
volunteer put sweet Isla in her car and rushed her up to the amazing
Dr. Amanda Miller at Palm Beach Animal Hospital. Once arriving, it
took a few hours for Dr Miller to stabalize Isla as her temperature
was very low and her gums were white.
When she determined that her injuries to one of her legs were so
severe that it needed immediate amputation, she scheduled her for an
all day surgery on the next morning. Her is sweet Isla waking up from surgery:
Initially, the surgery had went very well but a
few hours later, Dr Miller was rushing back up to the office because
something was very wrong, on Friday night she writes:
"The
little girl is having a rough night . She recovered well from surgery
then took a turn for the worse tonight. She is having an issue with
her heart-likely it was bruised when she was hit. Please keep her in
your thoughts tonight. I will be up at the hospital with her, keeping
her comfortable and trying to correct this cardiac arrhythmia. Her
name is Isla."
After a sleepless night by her side, she updates us again in the
morning:
"Isla is doing a bit better this am. She is alert
and eating and her heart rate, while still high, is out of the danger
zone. She has a bit of a fever and an increased respiratory rate and
harsh lungsounds. She also has become more anemic. We will do chest
x-rays this am and continue to monitor her anemia."
Due to Dr Miller's already planned trip and Isla's unexpected fragile state, she had her transfered to Palm Beach Veterinary Specialist until Monday when she returns. This is yet another cost that Dr Miller has taken on. She is not a rescue with community donations coming in or grants she is eligible for. She is one person, just like you and I, who works for a living. And while her job gives her the ability to help dogs like Isla, it comes at a cost and this one is a lot bigger than anyone ever thought.
Dr Miller has helped countless dogs from OUR COUNTY, our backyard and Isla is just one of them yet this is the first time anyone has asked for a dime and Urgent Dog of Palm Beach County is asking for it on her behalf because we truly believe that this dog deserves to be a community project. At only 10 months old, she was born here, abandon here, run over here and saved here. This is Isla's home and we should set a precident that we take care of our own. Please donate to Isla's care if you are so compelled to be part of her journey. And share her story around and the story of an amazing vet who puts herself on the line emotionally and financially to save an animal in need.
