As many of you know by now, The Lord has laid it on my heart to adopt a Guatemalan family for the next six months. It all started when my friend Ben notified me of a post on our church bulletin - a young girl from rural Guatemala would be traveling to Dallas to have her foot amputated at Scottish Rite Hospital, have a prosthetic fitted, and be rehabilitated over the next six months. Almost immediately, I felt compelled to step in. In buying this house, I had prayed from the beginning that God would use it as a place of refuge - a testimony to His grace. After bringing it up with my home group and asking them to partner with me in prayer and financial support, I felt assured that this endeavor would be feasible and worshipful to The Lord.
Teresa's from a village outside of Frey Bartolomé de las Casas in the central part of Guatemala in the province of Alta Verapaz. She is 16 years old and only speaks Qekchí, a Mayan dialect. Her older brother, Manuel, will accompany her during her time here, as he is the only member of the family who speaks Spanish. They have been working with American missionaries, Gary and Lily Stone of the International Mission Board, to facilitate their travel here to the United States. Lily tells me that Teresa and Manuel are incredibly intelligent and kind people, and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to serve my new brother and sister.
A retired missionary couple who speak Qekchí will fly from their home in Georgia to DFW this Thursday (Aug. 8) for one week while Teresa and Manuel transition. Once Teresa and Manuel arrive on Friday (Aug. 9), the four of them will stay at the Ronald McDonald House to be nearer to the hospital during initial testing, diagnostics, etc. Our hope during this week is to have her surgery and treatments scheduled, so that we can better serve her and plan for transportation needs, as well as spend some time getting to know each other while someone is able to translate . During her stay here, there will be times when she will have extended stays at the hospital, but my home will become the base during longer periods between appointments.
I have been praying and working the past week to prepare for their arrival, and I am so excited to finally meet them! I found out that they are believers and quite active with the mission in their town. I am so incredibly excited to worship with Teresa and Manuel, and I can't wait to bring them to the home group!
I am asking for you to consider contributing financially and spiritually to host our brother and sister. I would like to collect $350 each month to help out with groceries, haircuts, and toiletries. If you have any old clothes (especially for winter), we will gladly collect it. I have set up a Fundrazr.com account to make online and credit card donations easier, as well as to let supporters see how much need is left each month.
Secondly, my hope is that they would experience the fellowship described in Acts 2, despite our language barriers. I would love for them to see people other than me, so if you are able, please consider inviting them over for dinner, help with transport, or visit them at the hospital when Teresa is staying overnight for treatment.
I will be sending my budgets and statements monthly to my home group leader (Kip Young), mentor (Joe Ader), and best friend (Beau Henderson) for accountability and good stewardship of donations and gifts. I will also be using Mint.com to track my expenses. If you would like to see a copy of my budget/statements, please let me know. I want to be as transparent as possible.
I hope you will consider partnering with me in this mission, and thank you guys again for all your prayers and support!
