The Problems:
- Massive Waste: Every year, Canada sees over 1.6 billion disposable cups discarded. Most of these cups end up in landfills rather than being recycled, contributing significantly to environmental degradation.
- Confusion and Inconsistency: Many people struggle to find appropriate disposal options for disposable cups due to varying bin shapes, signage, and accepted materials. Consequently, a large number of cups end up in blue bins, where remaining liquids spill and contaminate recyclable materials.
- Waste and Odor Issues: In many areas, including Toronto, the correct practice is to discard these cups in garbage bins. This not only wastes bin volume but also creates unpleasant odors, further complicating waste management efforts.
The Solution: At ILS Canada, we’ve developed the RE-CUP Station—an innovative system to efficiently collect used cups. In collaboration with the York University Economic Department team, we are dedicated to protecting blue bin recyclables from contamination and separately collecting disposable cups for recycling. This initiative not only improves recycling efficiency but also significantly reduces landfill waste.
