Life for the stray dogs of Alaskan bush villages is rough. A lack of veterinarian care means no spay/neuter and, in turn, many unwated dogs. With no homes and no animal control, the only means of population management has been to kill the strays. We have been working with villages throughout the state for 7yrs and have made slow but steady progress in giving them another option of sending these unwanted dogs to rescues. Now, Alaskan Animal Rescue Friends and Bethel Friends of Canines is teaming up for a huge undertaking. The village of Tuntutuliak has requested we visit and remove all stray dogs from the village instead of killing them which is historically the way stray populations have been managed throughout rural Alaska. We can not express how happy we are that the Tunt village council has decided to try another, more humane option and we hope when other villages see this they too will follow Tunts example. Together, AARF and BFK9 will be sending volunteers to Tunt on Jan. 31st and they will return on Feb. 2nd. While there, our volunteers will be providing free vaccinations and we will be chartering two planes to help bring dogs from Tunt to Bethel and, Because this is a big endeavor, other rescues are helping out and taking dogs as well. The dogs will be adopted out through AARF, The Hound Lounge, and Ak Cat and Dog....Northern Air Cargo will be donating the flights getting dogs from Bethel in to Anchorage...and Dr. Hagee will be vetting the dogs once they are here. This is a large group project that is going to cost quite a bit to undertake and we can definitely use donations to help fund this rescue endeavor. Donations of any amount will help and are so appreciated!! Please share!!
