Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
No day in rescue is an easy day. Today we learned that any day in rescue preparing for a huge hurricane makes an average rescue day look maybe not quite so bad. Today our team and community came together to do the impossible and somehow, some way we made it happen.
Overnight, Dorian's tracking shifted south to move closer to South Florida, and early this AM, we learned that, for understandable reasons, our partner vets needed us to move ALL our dogs out of their practices in preparation for the storm.
While our team was trying to prepare their own homes, dogs, and fosters for the storm, President Pam and Joanna, our Doxie Taxi coordinator now had the evacuation of SIXTEEN DOGS from Broward and Palm Beach Counties to new spots, that Pam literally had no idea where they could go.
At any given time, our fosters are bursting at the seams, and we now had 16 dogs (including medical needs, bonded pairs, and a dog aggressive dog that could not be with any other dogs) that somehow, some way, needed to find homes, and get transported there.
By the time it was all said and done, SIXTEEN dogs found new spots to ride out the storm AND got transported to new homes - These are just a few of the miracles that happened today.
- Boutique Foster Home A, J, and the Weenies took two more on top of the 4 fosters they have (including hoarding dogs) on top of their personal dogs.
- Boutique Foster Home Adoption Couture took two more to bring their foster total to 8 including a hoarding dog and IVDD survivor
- DRSF Alum Charm's family opened their home to Keena who still has her stitches in
- Vet Techs from Dr. Wemen's Animal Hospital took dogs
- Southern Chute's Field team transported dogs, coordinating drop offs at vets until fosters could pick them up, and waited for people to get home from work to deliver dogs, all while burning their own personal gas when there is no gas to be had anywhere in South Florida.
We had to beg, borrow, steal, provide food and supplies, and rob Peter to pay Paul to get it all done, but somehow, it got done. We are emotionally drained, exhausted, and exhilarated all at the same time. We don't know what lies ahead for us in the next few days. All we can do is go day by day and work with what we have. We ran up one heck of a tab making miracles and don't want to impose any more on those who are helping us than have done so already. Will you help us cover our costs for keeping our promise to those dogs in our care?
