Battle Health Consulting hasn't added a story.
T.J. Smith was admitted to the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in early January 2016. He wasn’t quite sure what was going on, but that visit changed his life. Actually, it saved his life.
T.J. is originally from St. Anthony, Newfoundland, a small northern community on the Great Northern Peninsula. T.J. grew up there and was a great student in school and athlete outside of the classroom. He got along with everyone and had a great family structure.
T.J. left his home at the age of 18 to play Junior A hockey in Nova Scotia. After his playing days, he turned his attention to coaching. Coaching fast became his greatest passion. He has been in Nova Scotia for 13 years.
T.J. graduated from St. Mary’s University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations.
In January 2016, he was finally diagnosed with major depression, anxiety, and OCD during his time in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He spent a total of five weeks in the Psychiatric Unit over three separate admittances. T.J. was tired of hiding his illness and decided to speak openly about it and that’s when everything changed.
In December 2016, T.J. decided to begin working on creating his own business that could help other people with mental illnesses. Combining his coaching, education, and personal experience backgrounds, T.J. felt he could make a difference in people’s lives by helping them with their mental illness. In June 2017, he created Battle Health Consulting.
T.J.’s main goal is to help people. There are lack of mental health services in Nova Scotia and the rest of Atlantic Canada. Smith wants to bridge the gap between wait times for people and offer peer-support to people that struggle with mental illness. T.J. is quite clear that he is not a doctor that can diagnose or prescribe drugs to people. Rather, he is someone that has been through the mental illness battles himself and he feels he can empathize and sympathize with individuals, families, and businesses.
There are six main causes for me starting this business;
1) To help end the mental illness stigma in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
2) To help others through peer-support mentoring, coaching, advocating, and advising.
3) To help reduce wait times for mental illness help and support in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
4) To provide mentoring and leadership for the youth age group (13-22) to help with understanding and accepting their mental illness.
5) To inspire people to stop hiding their mental illness and promote them to get the proper clinical help.
6) To inform people that fighting a mental illness is possible and we can live our lives with it.
The money from this campaign will go into obtaining efficient office space to do this work. Money will also be used for additional peer-support accreditation, for occupational health and safety training, and as well as advancing my learning in the field of psychology. Money will also be used to create care packages for patients that are in hospitals suffering from depression other mental illnesses.
I am asking for the financial help because getting a loan from a bank will be impossible for me. To be honest, as I always am, my credit situation is not up to standards for banks to approve me of any amount of loan. I made bad decisions earlier in my life, a lot were related to my depression and coping in unsuccessful ways. I believe I can really inspire to help people fight their mental illness. I can help families understand mental illness better from my own experiences. I can help businesses with their mental health management. I can encourage schools, teams, and clubs to seek help for their organization. I will be a role model for our youth to show them mental illness is not a weakness, and it is something that can be fought so they can live a fulifilling and purposeful life. I want to help lower suicide rates in Atlantic Canada.
I WILL and I CAN inspire hope!
