A few days ago, I received an email from my alma mater, Bryn Mawr College, announcing that Tae Keller (BMC '15) was awarded the Newbery Medal for her novel When You Trap a Tiger. I immediately had two thoughts: this is our next read-aloud novel! and I should reach out to the author regarding speaking to my 7th-grade Humanities students at Whitford Middle School!
I am super excited to read the novel and with your help to raise the $500 speaking fee, have the author visit, via Zoom, to our 7th-grade class! In addition, BEF has generously purchased 20 copies of the book from Powell's Books for our students to check out on their own. Our students deserve a treat (with a little education mixed in!). This novel will bring us into the world of Korean folklore-new to many of our students- and will encourage discussions surrounding cultural folklore stories. I envision a research project involving these stories and how we can integrate them into our own personal identity work. A quote from a review speaks volumes as to this being a story we need to hear right now! "Tae Keller . . . shares a sparkling tale about the power of stories and the magic of family". Please help us raise the $500 speaking fee for this young author to share her wisdom with us!

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom projects, summer and after-school programs.
