Terra Nova School of Science and Sustainability is a science options school, where students from six Beaverton high schools learn applied Chemistry and Field Biology.

We work together to grow and cook organic food, practice self-sufficiency and promote sustainability. Our unique 1.5 acre farm, kitchen, and wood shop provide an ideal environment for students to educate themselves and their peers within a project based framework.

The most important thing we can do to grow healthy food is to build healthy soil. Part of this process is aerating or bringing oxygen into, the soil. It is possible to aerate the soil with a motorized rototiller, but there are many disadvantages to this method. Think; it costs upwards of $1000, it is a job for only one adult, it uses fossil fuels, and it disturbs the established soil ecology. Instead, with the money we raise, we would like to purchase four broadfork tools to add to our garden tool arsenal! The broadfork is a large hand tool that aerates the soil even deeper than a rototiller can, without disrupting the soil ecology too much. It is also a job that students can do, and believe it or not, they enjoy doing very much! It teaches them patience, thoroughness, and hard work. Students will also use them in their own garden beds where they grow crops during the school year and make a meal with that food at the end of the school year.

We are asking for your help in funding this project. With more broadforks, we will be able to take care of our precious soil and engage more students in meaningful hard work to grow more healthy food for our community!

We will need:

$758 for (2) 14" Broadfork 2 packs

$52 for shipping

We hope you will join us in giving students a better opportunity to grow food!
