Sunset High School has begun offering a new course this year, Health and Human Performance.  In this course we focus on the physical and mental wellness of anyone interested in athletics.  It is open to all students including but not limited to, ones who previously competed in athletics, ones who currently compete in athletics, and those who may want to compete in athletics in the future.  It is also open to anyone who has a joy for movement and fitness as well as those who may support athletes in the future as a fan, coach, or support person of an athlete. In this course, students learn more about the culture of sport surrounding diverse topics such as leadership, sportsmanship, conflict resolution, influences on diet and nutrition. 

During our Leadership and Communication units we will emphasize the importance of working together despite personal differences.  We will also look at our own leadership styles and identify areas of strengths and areas of improvement.  Our culminating assessment will be an activity in which they will be grouped together with others who share their same leadership style and they will need to complete a challenge.  This shows them how it feels to work with their own leadership style.  We are hoping to be able to go to Portland Escape rooms in Beaverton and have the groups work through the challenges together.  They will strengthen their leadership skills, their communication skills, and grow in the area of cooperation.  They will be assessed on their completion of the course as well as their reflection of the activity.
