Hello. I'm Dana James, founder & publisher of Black Iowa News. As a child growing up in Iowa, I would search the newspaper for stories about people who looked like me but rarely find them. I founded Black Iowa News in 2020, to highlight Black perspectives, showcase the Black community and amplify the voices of Black Iowans. Highlighting the need, our weekly email newsletter grew in popularity from a handful of friends and colleagues to nearly 5,000 subscribers today.

But I wanted to reach more Black Iowans.

In 2023, I founded the quarterly statewide Black Iowa Newspaper, where I am committed to showcasing Black Iowans on every page, in every photo and in every paragraph. Readers crave fair, nuanced and trustworthy news coverage, especially now. They also crave and deserve representation. The newspaper, whose motto is "prioritizing, educating, and uplifting ourselves," strives to connect Iowans and build community.

Delivering high-quality journalism to 24 cities in more than 100 locations around Iowa is as important as it is costly.
