Andree Ralph hasn't added a story.
Hi there! My name's Andree and like many of you who will be reading this, along with my fiance Darren, we have three beautiful, fun loving, energetic Jack Russells. We have two brothers - Indiana and Shilo who are 2 years old and their honorary 'Uncle' Diesel who's around 5.
Like any dogs and especially young ones, our guys love to go for walks, run and play, investigate and get muddy and do all the things dogs love to do and we, as their guardians, love to enjoy with them. For us though it's not quite as simple as popping along to the park, taking their leads off and letting them go and play as much as they want to...
You see, aside from being terriers which means they can easily get fixated on something like a rabbit or squirrel causing them to 'switch off' to us with little or no recall, meaning they could get into trouble really quickly off lead, our Indiana is also 'reactive' to other dogs i.e.he barks and doesn't like them in his space - he's fine with his 'family' and can be OK with some dogs but what he really hates is when other dogs, no matter how friendly or playful they really are, come running at him off lead and come straight into his space, bowling him over or jumping on him. He's a small JRT and he finds that really difficult to deal with and will react by barking and trying to make them go away.
For us our daily walk has to be planned like a military operation - Indiana wears a lead and harness that asks people to 'give him space' and we chose our routes, times and locations to try to avoid as many potentially negative experiences as possible - in order to help Indie with his reactivity we need to 'set up and manage' as many positive interactions with other dogs as we can so he can come to learn he'll be OK.
Sadly despite all of this, we still have to regularly deal with off-lead dogs with little or no recall running at speed towards him and into his space while their guardians watch and say "it's OK he/she's freindly..." Well, actually it's not OK....it's not OK at all.
I know we are not the only ones locally who face an almost constant worry of keeping their dog happy and safe while out walking. By the way this isn't a 'dig' at those guardians who are able to let their dogs off lead safely, honestly that's fantastic for you and your dogs....it's just that for some of us that just isn't possible, either temporarily or permanently for all kinds of reasons.....like us, it might be reactivity or nervousness; we might be walking a rescued dog who's finding things a bit tough; we might be walking a dog who's in training and needs to focus; we might have an older dog who can't handle being jumped on and played with or a dog who's blind or deaf or we might be gently exercising a dog who's recovering from an illness or injury. There are lots of reasons that we might need our dogs to be left alone to walk quietly and enjoy themselves.
This is where the idea for Scruffy's Field comes in.....
Scruffy was our beloved JRT, a wonderful and gentle dog who passed away at the age of 19 having lived a long and happy life. He was able to run off lead (although we had to watch for rabbits), he played with our horses and loved to run right up until he became deaf and a bit wobbly in his older age when he was still able to have fun, just on-lead and at a much slower pace. The field is named in his honour and as his legacy.
Scruffy's Field will be a location with secure spaces for dog guardians to hire exclusively to allow their dogs to play, exercise, train or run freely and safely, without the worry of them getting into trouble by running off or being bothered by other unknown dogs. It will also provide a location for rescue organisations and/or trainers to work with dogs in a safe controllable environment.
Ideally I am looking for a field of approximately 2-4 acres which will be divided into 3 or 4 spaces with secure fencing and gates, available to hire by the hour - one a simple space to run freely and safely, one with some obstacles and things to play with and one with a bit of woodland or natural interest.
There will be someone on hand to welcome you and show you what's what and maybe even a place to grab a coffee and a biscuit!
There will need to be an hourly charge for using the spaces to cover on-going running costs and upkeep - initially around £10.00 per hour, with discounts for booking several sessions at the same time, group rates for trainers or friends wishing to hire the space together and special arrangements for rescue/voluntary organisations.
This fundraising campaign will seek to raise the money to purchase a suitable piece of land, purchase and erect the fencing and security features, provide the relevant permissions and insurances and so create a little bit of sanctuary for any dog guardian wishing to have some 121 times with their dogs without distractions.
In order to make this campaign as successful as possible, the plan is that everyone who contributes via this page or directly to the project will have the option to have that contribution count towards their own use of the facilities once we are up and running (if they wish to do so - make sure to leave your name and contact details) so for example, if you contribute £10.00 not only will you be helping to make this space a reality, you'll have credited a hours session for you and your dogs too. Of course, if you simply wish to contribute to provding a safe place for local dogs and their guardians to have fun, that would be amazing!!
