Saint Paul Cozy is a playful community art project that involves wrapping 158 city lampposts with cozies made by Minnesota residents. The cozies will be installed along a 12 block stretch of 4th Street in downtown St. Paul from Jan 25-March 3, 2018.

Call to Action | Contribute to a unique, community-building, public art project!

Thousands of visitors will be heading to downtown St. Paul this January for the 2018 Winter Carnival and Super Bowl LII festivities. Saint Paul Cozy will bring color and cheer to the winter streetscape, pique curiosity about Minnesota's capitol city, and showcase the creativity of Minnesota residents.

Over 130 Minnesota fiber artists and crafters have already answered the call to knit, crochet, weave and quilt the cozies. Now Saint Paul Cozy is inviting individuals, clubs, and businesses to show their love for the capitol city by sponsoring a lamppost!

Each cozy will be labeled with a double-sided, laminated tag that has the name of the cozy maker and the name of the lamppost sponsor. Makers and Sponsors will also be acknowledged on the project website and on a handpainted sign that will be displayed at CHS Field.

About the Project

Inspired by yarn-bombing, this community-sourced art project involves wrapping city lampposts with handmade cozies. The cozies will be exhibited along 4th Street from Rice Park to CHS Field from Jan 25 - March 3, 2018.  A special 4' x 16' artist-made project sign will be displayed on the CHS Field plaza. The street-level exhibit will be complimented by a photo gallery, makers' profiles, and cozy stories on the project website, saintpaulcozy.com.

The project is coordinated by Lowertown artists Tara Weatherly and Rachel Wacker of the Rage to Order Artist Initiative with support from the St. Paul Saints Art Program.

The Campaign

Rage to Order was able to launch this project thanks to a generous grant from the St. Paul Saints and in-kind donations of labor and material from participating cozy makers. The project was designed to be scaled based on the number of makers willing to contribute cozies. Due to the volume of participants, Saint Paul Cozy will be able to cover all of the lamppost along the entire length of 4th Street, as well as the posts around Rice Park and the Farmers Market.  Rage to Order has raised $12,000 of the $19,000 needed to produce the full 158 lamppost, 12 block project. They are seeking community support to cover the remaining $7,000 in project costs.

What are the costs associated with this project?

  • Community Outreach and Artist Stipends- The vast majority of labor for this project is being donated by volunteers. However, the project would not be possible without a few individuals who can dedicate a significant amounts of time and/or skilled labor. The stipends will modestly compensate those individuals without whom, this project could not be completed.
  • Supplies - The supplies involved in this project include: materials for cozy makers who are not able to purchase their own, project signage, cozy labels, hardware, installation materials and tools, etc.
  • Promotion Materials, Website and Documentation
  • Community Building Events - Saint Paul Cozy is hosting a series of "Meet and Make" gatherings at local coffee shops prior to the installation and a project receptions. The bulk of the "community event" budget will be put toward the public reception for cozy makers and sponsors.
