Ridgewood Music hasn't added a story.
Hello! My name is Juli Shaw and I am the music teacher at Ridgewood Elementary School. I have been teaching music for 16 years, 11 of these have been with the amazingly talented students at Ridgewood.
A few years ago, we were lucky to borrow half a class set of ukuleles from another school. While this worked in the short term, we had to partner up and were limited in the amount of material we could get to in a short time. Even so the students love this unit! They found that they could be successful quickly with these four-string instruments, which made learning fun and engaging. Ukuleles are easy to play as the chord shapes are easy to form and memorize without the pain that steel strings can bring. Most songs have ukulele versions that are easily accessible. This encourages students to practice at home and inspires many to write their own compositions. Many of my students want on to purchase their own ukuleles and continue taking lessons on their own.
Ukuleles are one of the few instruments that are accessible to all ages. Younger students learn how to hold the ukulele and strum a few chords while singing along to simple songs. As students get older and progress, they are able to play a variety of music including folk songs, melodies, and even accompany current pop songs. Students can play alone or in groups. The ukulele is one of the few instruments we can offer that allow students to sing and accompany themselves at the same time. Once students learn 3 to 4 chords, the possibilities are endless. As their confidence grows, they are able to continue to take up other instruments in middle school and beyond. |
Ukulele units cover so many elements of music!
Pitch, rhythm, harmony, expression - the list goes on and on.
I would like to purchase the classroom set of
Kala MK-S soprano ukuleles. These are the standard ukuleles used in
other Beaverton schools. They are durable and have a beautiful,
mellow sound.
Goal: I am asking for $2280.99 for a class of set of 30 ukuleles as well as the accompanying tuners, strings, and methods book. This goal also includes a ukulele rack to house all instruments safely for long-lasting protection.
30 Kala MK-S ukes at $49.99 a
piece= $1499.70,
4 Kala Klipz Tuner at
$15=$63.96,
8 Aquila Strings at $7.00= $56.00,
Method
Book at $10.99.
That equals $1630.65 but the charge for the
set through West Music is only $1539.00.
The Cart to safely
house the ukuleles is $609.00. It will cost $132.00 to ship it to
the school for a total of $2280.09.
Thank you so much for supporting music at Ridgewood!
