As the Technology Instructor at
Rock Creek Elementary School, I work closely with our Library
Instructor. We share a common learning space and share many of our
resources. We use devices (Chromebooks and iPads) during our
rotation times to enhance our lessons and make them more hands on
for our students. Together we want to be able to broaden the scope
of how we use technology to teach our classes.
Currently, we only have fifteen
iPads but have class sizes up to thirty-one students. We would
like to have enough iPads for all students to be able to work with
them during their library and technology rotations.
During Library rotations our students have many opportunities to use technology, such as the BSD Library Page, our library circulation system to help them check out books, and an application called Sora to check out ebooks. They can also use the research pages to open up a world of information on a safe resource page.
For our Technology rotations we have turned the focus to more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) for our kindergarten through second grade classes. Third through fifth grade classes are still using their Chromebooks to focus on computer skills as well as adding several STEAM activities with those grades.
Over the years we have purchased items that lend well to the STEAM focus. Many of the items require an iPad to be successful. We have four different kinds of robots and Osmos that will not work without an iPad.
The apps to run the programs used during Library and Technology rotations are not the standard set of apps used in a classroom setting. Therefore having a set of iPads specifically set up for Library and Technology rotations would allow the iPads to be set and ready to go when students arrive at their rotations.

successful students.
Our library department is able to
provide $1000 towards this investment, and the Beaverton Education
Foundation is supporting us with a Building STEAM 4 All match on
the first $1250 donated! Each iPad + license costs $360. Thank you

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom projects, summer and after-school programs.
