Hello, my name is Anne Duncan and I am the school counselor at Montclair Elementary. We're located in the Beaverton School District and have just under 400 students. We are a caring, supportive school community wanting to create a space at school for students to feel relaxed and calm. We need your help to install a sensory calm room. This space will greatly improve our ability to respond to the learning and support needs of all students at Montclair

Based on the outskirts of Portland, Montclair Elementary nurtures, inspires and expands horizons for all our students  by giving them the space to learn the skills they need in order to regulate their emotions and bodies while at school. This space will allow students to continue this learning environment safely and less disruptive to the rest of the students in the builidng.

To help children successfully participate in school, we want to install a sensory calm room (with soothing music, lighting and bean bags) which they can retreat too for ‘time out’. Having a safe, comforting space to go too when they feel overwhelmed will greatly reduce their distress, helping us to better support their immediate health and well-being.

Over time the calm room will help them to identify, express and self-manage difficult feelings such as anxiety, stress, and anger before they escalate into ‘crisis’ episodes - a vital life skill. The room will also be used to build trust and facilitate communication with students who have complex and high level needs. This room will help vulnerable students break free from a destructive cycle in the classroom and ensure acitivies that will boost their self-esteem , develop their skills, and give them qualifications to advance their lives.

This project is supported by the Beaverton Education Foundation.

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.

In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
