There has been decline in the teaching and learning of foundational writing skills (handwriting, letter formations, spelling) over the last ten years. The pandemic and distance learning exacerbated the problem through the emphasis of technology which has negatively impacted our students’ fine motor skills - handwriting. Handwriting is an essential component of our literacy curriculum. McKinley’s Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade teachers are committed to ongoing professional development and collaboration led by our Academic Coaches to foster a culture of providing explicit handwriting instruction that build automaticity for strong literacy development.
Purposeful hands on multi-sensory tools make handwriting instruction developmentally appropriate, engaging, and fun! These tools also provide teachers with opportunities to give in the moment corrective feedback which is essential for breaking bad habits. The boogie boards, otherwise known as LCD writing tablets, are amazing devices that our students can use to draw, write, and explore. These boogie boards will be used to support students’ development of handwriting skills such as memory, orientation, placement, size, starting point, sequence, and spacing. The Wood Pieces Set helps our students learn capital formations. The manipulation of the wood pieces supports memory and orientation of letters.
By supporting this curricular initiative, you will be helping to
lay the foundational writing skills necessary for legible and
automatic handwriting. As a result, our students writing will
improve as well as the quality of their written compositions in
higher grades. Ultimately, once our students are equipped with the
foundational skills then a quality composition becomes attainable
and then their overall skilled written expression will soar!

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom projects, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal or exceeds its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another similar project.
