Montclair Elementary, Dax Smith hasn't added a story.
Hello,
I am Dax Smith and I am raising fund to put together a unit of study in my music classes that makes connections with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. (STEM)
Science and engineering happen everyday in music class when a student picks up and creates sound with a percussion, string or wind instrument. Students physically create sound with the beat of a drum or strike of a mallet and now, with the connection of a circuit. The Makey Makey brings the inner workings of circuit boards out of the box and into to a child’s hands. Students will use imagination, creativity and the design process to create an electrical system for producing sounds, using this motivating piece of hardware. New technology is not an affront to the creative hands-on process of traditional arts programs. New technology is yet another tool we can use in the creative process and an additional mode for performance.
Technology being used by students at the elementary level has increased dramatically. Much of that technology is screen based. Students are sitting, working on screens. To balance the sedentary use of technology, there needs to be a more interactive, collaborative, imaginative and artful use of new technology. The Makey Makey allows a music teacher to bring STEM into their music class while teaching rhythm, harmony, form and the creative process. The Makey Makey brings the idea of home-made or found instruments into the 21st century, giving students the ability to use visual programming languages like Scratch to create a soundscapes for performances, rhythmic pieces with drum machine sounds as well as creating the system that triggers those sounds. Instruments can be triggered through a body percussion shirt with metallic patches for different sounds, fruits that are assigned to different pitches, paper circuits drawn with metallic paint or hand to hand contact with another student.
The funds you give will be used to purchase enough Makey Makey kits so that a class of thirty students will have enough for students to collaborate together in small groups. We will also purchase extra supplies for creating conductive instruments and a carrying case so they may be safely transferred between schools.
If you share in the belief that students should be given the opportunity to express themselves through a variety of art forms as well as using the creative process within technology, then we could use your support. By donating to this project you will not only help students at my school but hundreds more as these tools will be shared with all other elementary music teachers across the Beaverton schools district.
Thank you for your generous support of our students.
This project is supported by the Beaverton Education Foundation.
Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
