The Goal - 240 kilometers for $240,000 in 24 hours
Support us in our grueling 24-Hour relay run to help food insecurity!
We aim to raise $120,000 from donors which George Weston will double to $240,000 with a 100% match !
This year, our team is taking on an incredible challenge: running for 24 hours consecutively with the goal of covering 240 kilometers! The run will take place from 5:30 PM on October 24th to 5:30 PM on October 25th, with our route spanning across the streets of Toronto. We’ll be running laps between our downtown corporate offices, from the George Weston Office to the PC Bank Office, with each lap covering 15 kilometers.
The route will take us down Yonge Street, west along Lakeshore, north on Bathurst, and east on St. Clair, with a checkpoint at the halfway mark. Our team will also be camping out at 22 St. Clair, with runners sleeping in the 7th floor cafeteria between shifts. Join us in supporting this amazing cause as we push ourselves to the limit for 24 hours! We will cover the 240 km with only 10 runners, with each individual runner covering between 15 km and 37 km !
The History
In October 2020, a team of George Weston employees (the “Magnificent Milers”) undertook the challenge of running a mile as a relay in under 4 minutes 18 seconds, which was the world record for their leader’s age category.
In October 2022 we upped our game, and ran a mile in only 3 minutes and 58 seconds (a speed of 25km/h), thereby honouring one of the great sporting landmarks in history i.e. the first ever sub-4 minute mile by Roger Bannister in 1954, a feat considered not humanly possible until it was accomplished by him.
In October 2023, the Milers took it a step further and aimed for the world record mile of 3 minutes and 43 seconds. The team successfully ran a mile in 3 minutes, 43.16 seconds in front of a loud group of colleagues, friends and family in support!
This year, after shattering all of their single-mile goals, the team is pushing their endurance to its edge and aim to run for 24 hours consecutively in what we like to call – “Magnificent Milers – The Longest Mile”. The goal is for the team to run for 24 hours as a relay, and aim to complete 240 km by the end of the event.
This is an incredibly challenging goal for amateur runners, even as a relay, needing to run on average 1km every 6 minutes over the course of 24 hours. We invite all donors to come and watch us kick off the event on October 24th @ 5pm right at our home base at 22 St Clair Ave E!
The Charity
Running 24 Hours for Food Insecurity
The Magnificent Milers are hitting the streets this October to raise funds for the North York Harvest Food Bank. This year’s relay aims to be more ambitious than ever, with the goal of running for 24 hours consecutively, pushing the limits of endurance and teamwork for a great cause.
After raising over $450,000 for the North York Harvest Food Bank through our last three endeavours, our hope is to raise a similar amount through a single event this time. The need and importance of the work being done by food banks across the country has never been higher.
Approximately 1 in 5 Canadians face some level of food insecurity, many of them are our neighbours, colleagues, friends and family members. With the rising cost of living, families often have to make the difficult decision choosing between putting nutritious food on their table and paying rent.
North York Harvest is seeing a record number of Torontonians coming to its network for emergency food. In fact, the network is currently serving 25,000 community members each month. Among them, 30% are children and 12% are seniors. Nearly half the adults coming to food banks are currently employed, yet not able to make ends met given food and rent inflation.
George Weston Limited will double the impact of your donation, by providing a 100% match to every dollar. Imagine what our collective goal of raising $240,000 can do!
The Route
The runners will start at their “Home Base” at 22 St Clair Ave. E and head south on Yonge Street, then head west once they get to Lakeshore, and will have a team waiting to check in with them at the halfway point at the Lakeshore and Bathurst Office. From there the runners will continue north on Bathurst through a steady uphill run, until they get to St. Clair Avenue, where they will finish off the loop by heading East until they get back to Home Base (GWL Office).

The Team
Our runners will be facing this challenge as a relay, but even this will push each participant to their limit. Our team of runners are GWL/LCL employees or children/immediate family. They have been hard at work with their training to ensure they can achieve this milestone for the North York Harvest Food Bank.
