Mountain View Middle School hasn't added a story.
Middle school can be tough, but it helps when you can see yourself reflected in a story. Our late reading intervention teacher and instructional coach, Jody Davis, lived by this belief. Jody knew that not all students come to us with a love of reading, but it was her goal that they would leave Mountain View with that passion. She worked tirelessly to build relationships with students and figure out which books would hook them. Over the years, Jody cultivated an incredible library of high-interest books at all levels. Many of these books would end up going home with students when they found the perfect match!
Jody passed away suddenly in November and her death has left a void in our community. We want to honor her passion and success by creating a cozy space in our library for our students to relax, reflect, and read. In addition to quality, cleanable sofas and stools, we're building a free little library. So many of our students do not have their own books at home. When a students finds "their" book, we want them to be able to take it home to reread or share with others. The idea is that this will be a place where students can take books, but also bring in books to share with others so that Jody's memory will live on. All books that come into this library will get a sticker reflecting that it is in memory of Mrs. Davis.
Your donation will impact our current student population, as well as the thousands of students that will enter our building in the future. You will also help preserve the memory of an extraordinary teacher and allow her to continue to influence our students for years to come.
The average middle grade / young adult paperback novel is about $7 and graphic novels are about $12. We're requesting $1200 specifically for books. To create an inviting atmosphere, we plan to spend $300 on a rug (preferable with sunflowers, Jody's favorite) and posters. The remaining money will go toward furniture specifically designed for school libraries. It is soft, allergen-free, and easily cleanable. The first $1200 in donations are DOUBLED thanks to the Beaverton Education Foundation!
